SCX-4729FD/XAAIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible wired office making black Letter or Legal duplex documents and capturing prepared one-sided originals to its computers.

The main tradeoff

The FD does not include the FW wireless radio, and automatic print duplex does not provide automatic two-sided original capture.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a wired computer arrangement combine Legal duplex printing, color feeder scanning and occasional envelopes?

Yes on the reviewed USA 110V unit with compatible MFP software and registered scan destination. Suitable one-sided Legal originals fit the feeder, 250-sheet ordinary Legal output uses the cassette, and envelopes use their separate attended manual path. Fax also needs its compatible telephone line.

Can USB computer scanning use the flatbed for originals unsuitable for the feeder?

Yes with compatible scanner software and the original placed on the cleared glass route. A precise glass original-size list is unestablished, so this flexible-size answer does not promise Legal glass capture.

Does buying the FD establish a built-in Wi-Fi computer connection?

No. The exact manufacturer comparison assigns the wireless radio to FW. The FD wired Ethernet interface and USB port do not establish the FW wireless arrangement.

A wired multifunction choice with black output

The Samsung SCX-4729FD/XAA is an earlier USA monochrome laser multifunction configuration for printing, copying, color scanning and analog fax. It belongs in a wired computer setup: USB and Ethernet are included, while the related FW adds the wireless radio.

That distinction makes the FD a possible fit where the printer has a convenient network cable and the office mainly makes black documents. Choosing the less suitable connection variant can complicate placement more than a small difference in a headline print rate.

Plan the whole computer scanning arrangement

The original instructions support scanning to a compatible computer through USB or the network. Install the MFP software with its scanner components rather than assuming that a successfully installed print queue finishes setup. Test both the panel destination and the saved file location.

For Network PC capture, enable scan activation, register the computer ID and provide the configured four-digit scan password if requested. The password belongs to the destination workflow; it does not establish protected release of normal computer print jobs.

TWAIN can use the local or network connection. WIA is tied to USB in the reviewed guide. Check the exact current host software before relying on an earlier operating-system list, especially when several users need different scanning applications.

Some generic advanced chapters describe email, FTP/SMB or USB-memory capture, but the exact model matrix leaves those functions unavailable. A procedure appearing somewhere in the family manual should not become a feature promise for the FD.

Keep the two duplex questions separate

The print engine has automatic duplex output. For the USA 110V version, the guide lists Letter and Legal among the supported duplex sizes; A4 duplex is assigned to the 220V version. The cassette's ability to print A4 one-sided pages does not remove that electrical-edition restriction.

Original capture is different. The operating matrix lists an ADF and leaves DADF and duplex scanning unavailable. One USA marketing table says 50-sheet Duplex ADF, conflicting with a Canadian 40-sheet table and the explicit operating matrix. The numerical feeder capacity remains unresolved, and that marketing phrase does not establish automatic capture of both document sides.

Use the reviewed feeder arrangement for suitable one-sided originals. If automatic two-sided original capture is essential, choose equipment whose actual operating instructions confirm that routine. A two-sided printed copy or received fax does not prove two-sided original scanning.

Separate ordinary sheets, envelopes and original documents

The included cassette holds 250 sheets of ordinary 80 gsm Letter, Legal or A4 paper. The one-sheet manual feeder is attended and is not added to that unattended capacity. Adjust the tray extension and guides, then match device and driver paper settings.

Suitable envelopes use the manual path, with their own weight, construction and margin restrictions. Keep unsupported windows, clasps, damaged folds and unsuitable adhesives out of the paper path. Follow the rear-output instructions if a compatible envelope needs the straighter exit route.

The feeder's documented original range accommodates suitable documents through Legal within capture margins. Prepare a consistent stack, remove fasteners and load face up. The glass serves individual originals that should not enter the feeder; clear the feeder first because its detected originals take priority. Do not infer a Legal glass surface from the longer feeder limit.

Check the actual unit and its remaining support

The maker declares up to 29 one-sided Letter pages per minute, compared with 28 A4. Those figures are separate from scan images per minute and duplex output rates. The scanner's color capture also remains separate from the engine's black printed output.

The 12,000-page maximum monthly duty ceiling is not a recommended workload. The USA package's 1,000-page initial toner differs from the replacement declarations. Verify compatible consumables, present software, the actual electrical label and the separate telephone connection required for analog fax. Leave enough space for paper extensions, the lid, rear output and maintenance around the closed body.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

The original guide and USA table declare up to 29 one-sided Letter pages/min or 28 A4. Duplex output and scan images/min are separate measurements and not substituted for that figure. Black output remains distinct from color CIS document capture. The 12,000-page maximum monthly duty ceiling is not a recommended workload; no recommended monthly range is established. Manufacturer declarations are not measured performance.

Paper handling

The included cassette holds 250 sheets of ordinary 80 gsm Letter, Legal or A4 paper. The separate one-sheet manual feeder is attended and is not added to the unattended cassette capacity. For the reviewed USA 110V configuration, automatic print duplex supports Letter and Legal; the guide assigns A4 duplex to the 220V edition. A4 simplex support does not establish A4 duplex on the USA unit. Suitable envelopes use the manual feeder with the separate construction, weight and margin instructions. Device and driver size/type must match.

Scanning arrangement

The original exact-model feature matrix lists an ADF but leaves DADF and duplex scanning unavailable. Automatic two-sided original capture and single-pass duplex scanning are therefore false. A USA marketing table says 50-sheet Duplex ADF, conflicting with the operating matrix and a Canadian 40-sheet table; the numeric feeder capacity remains unresolved. The documented original range spans 142–216 mm width and 148–356 mm length, accommodating Letter, Legal and A4 within capture margins. The glass is positively established but its exact document-size list is not, so no Legal glass coverage is promised.

Computer and mobile connections

The FD includes USB and 10/100 Ethernet; the family explicitly reserves the wireless radio for FW. Compatible MFP software supports computer scanning over USB or the supported network connection. Enable scan activation in Easy Printer Manager and choose the registered Network PC ID; its configured four-digit password may be requested. TWAIN supports local or network connections; WIA is USB-specific. Generic advanced chapters describe USB-memory, email and FTP/SMB scanning, but those rows are unavailable in the exact feature matrix and are not assigned. A registered scan-destination password is not protected print release.

Supplies and declared yields

The USA configuration declares a 1,000-page initial cartridge and replacement MLT-D103S at 1,500 or MLT-D103L at 2,500 pages under ISO/IEC 19752. Verify regional suffix, actual remaining life and compatible current availability. Replacement yield is not initial yield, remaining yield or an operating-cost calculation.

Software and support

Original operating-system lists describe historical compatibility, not guaranteed current drivers. Check the intended print and scanner components before installation. No AirPrint, Mopria or PIN-release printing is established by the reviewed exact-model sections. Secure fax reception and a Confidential watermark are separate functions. Analog fax needs its separate compatible telephone connection and is not supplied by a network cable.

Electrical edition and setup

The USA brochure gives an approximate 16 x 13.3 x 15.1-inch unit body at 22.7 lb. The Canadian width is 15.9 inches; those nominal edition/rounding differences do not provide an exact enclosure tolerance. Allow extra room for the scanner lid, extended paper, rear output and service access. The guide distinguishes 110–127V and 220–240V versions and sends frequency/current confirmation to the physical rating label, so full US mains compatibility remains unverified.
