Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can Wi-Fi support black Legal duplex output and color capture of one-sided Legal originals?
Yes on the reviewed USA 110V configuration with compatible installed MFP software and registered scan destination. The cassette supplies 250 sheets of ordinary 80 gsm Legal; analog fax needs its separate compatible line.
Explore this need in the finder →Can a compatible USB computer use the glass and feeder when no exact scan size is essential?
Yes. Both physical routes and USB computer capture are established. The feeder has explicit original limits; unspecified glass size does not promise full Legal coverage. Suitable envelopes also have a separate one-at-a-time manual-feed routine.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the USA 110V unit automatically duplex A4 paper?
No qualifying A4 duplex arrangement is established for that electrical edition. The guide lists Letter and Legal among 110V duplex sizes and assigns A4 duplex to 220V versions. A4 simplex printing is a separate capability.
Explore this need in the finder →FW adds wireless access to a black document workstation
The Samsung SCX-4729FW/XAA, also identified as SS177B, is an earlier USA monochrome laser multifunction printer. It combines black output, color computer scanning, copying and analog fax with USB, Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Its practical appeal is a small office that wants those functions without moving every document to a separate scanner.
The deciding distinction from the FD is built-in wireless networking. That can simplify printer placement, but it does not remove the need for compatible computer software, an accessible scan destination or the separate telephone connection used by fax.
Make the wireless computer destination usable
A print queue working over Wi-Fi does not guarantee that panel-initiated scanning is ready. Install the scanner components, enable scan activation in Easy Printer Manager and register the intended computer. Confirm the destination folder and permissions before handing the workflow to another person.
The panel's Network PC routine can request the registered ID and its four-digit scan password. This identifies a computer destination. It should not be mistaken for a function that stores ordinary print jobs until someone releases them with a PIN.
The original guide supports TWAIN capture through local or network connections, while WIA is USB-specific. Check the present host operating system and available software before relying on these historical instructions. Generic advanced chapters also describe email, server and USB-memory capture, but the exact feature matrix leaves those functions unavailable for this configuration.
Printed duplex has a USA paper-size boundary
Automatic two-sided printing is included, but its size list depends on the electrical version. The guide assigns Letter and Legal to the 110V duplex arrangement, while A4 duplex belongs to the 220V version. Ordinary A4 simplex support does not establish A4 duplex on a USA machine.
The included cassette holds 250 sheets of suitable 80 gsm ordinary paper. A separate one-sheet manual feeder is an attended path, not another unattended cassette page. Adjust the guides and set the same source, size and type in the application, driver and machine.
Suitable envelopes use their own manual-feed routine. Follow the construction and weight restrictions, allow the specified margins and use the instructed rear-output arrangement if needed. The ordinary-paper duplex function should not be extended to envelopes.
A feeder does not establish two-sided original capture
The original operating matrix lists an automatic document feeder but leaves DADF and duplex scanning unavailable. That explicit distinction matters because one USA marketing sheet calls the feeder a 50-sheet Duplex ADF, while a Canadian sheet gives 40 sheets. The conflicting numerical capacity is unresolved here; the marketing wording does not create an automatic two-sided capture route.
Suitable one-sided originals through Legal fit the operating guide's document range within capture margins. Prepare a uniform stack and load it face up with the width guides aligned. Two-sided originals require a different, explicitly supported capture arrangement if automatic handling is essential.
The glass is a separate route for individual originals. Keep the feeder empty when using it because detected feeder originals take priority. Do not transfer the feeder's Legal document length to the glass or assume that the whole original is captured without edge margins.
Separate headline rates from everyday suitability
The manufacturer declares up to 29 one-sided Letter pages per minute, compared with 28 A4. Its black engine can still capture color originals, but cannot print color pages. Scan images per minute and duplex output rates are separate declarations, not substitutes for the one-sided Letter figure.
The 12,000-page maximum monthly duty ceiling is not a recommended monthly workload. The USA initial toner declaration is 1,000 pages, distinct from the standard and higher-yield replacement figures. Check actual consumable condition, current host support and the machine's electrical label, and leave working space beyond the closed body's dimensions.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
The original guide and USA table declare up to 29 one-sided Letter pages/min or 28 A4. Duplex output and scan images/min are separate measurements and not substituted for that figure. Black output remains distinct from color CIS document capture. The 12,000-page maximum monthly duty ceiling is not a recommended workload; no recommended monthly range is established. Manufacturer declarations are not measured performance.
Paper handling
The included cassette holds 250 sheets of ordinary 80 gsm Letter, Legal or A4 paper. The separate one-sheet manual feeder is attended and is not added to the unattended cassette capacity. For the reviewed USA 110V configuration, automatic print duplex supports Letter and Legal; the guide assigns A4 duplex to the 220V edition. A4 simplex support does not establish A4 duplex on the USA unit. Suitable envelopes use the manual feeder with the separate construction, weight and margin instructions. Device and driver size/type must match.
Scanning arrangement
The original exact-model feature matrix lists an ADF but leaves DADF and duplex scanning unavailable. Automatic two-sided original capture and single-pass duplex scanning are therefore false. A USA marketing table says 50-sheet Duplex ADF, conflicting with the operating matrix and a Canadian 40-sheet table; the numeric feeder capacity remains unresolved. The documented original range spans 142–216 mm width and 148–356 mm length, accommodating Letter, Legal and A4 within capture margins. The glass is positively established but its exact document-size list is not, so no Legal glass coverage is promised.
Computer and mobile connections
The FW includes USB, 10/100 Ethernet and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. Compatible MFP software supports computer scanning over USB or the supported network connection. Enable scan activation in Easy Printer Manager and choose the registered Network PC ID; its configured four-digit password may be requested. TWAIN supports local or network connections; WIA is USB-specific. Generic advanced chapters describe USB-memory, email and FTP/SMB scanning, but those rows are unavailable in the exact feature matrix and are not assigned. A registered scan-destination password is not protected print release.
Supplies and declared yields
The USA configuration declares a 1,000-page initial cartridge and replacement MLT-D103S at 1,500 or MLT-D103L at 2,500 pages under ISO/IEC 19752. Verify regional suffix, actual remaining life and compatible current availability. Replacement yield is not initial yield, remaining yield or an operating-cost calculation.
Software and support
Original operating-system lists describe historical compatibility, not guaranteed current drivers. Check the intended print and scanner components before installation. No AirPrint, Mopria or PIN-release printing is established by the reviewed exact-model sections. Secure fax reception and a Confidential watermark are separate functions. Analog fax needs its separate compatible telephone connection and is not supplied by a network cable.
Electrical edition and setup
The USA brochure gives an approximate 16 x 13.3 x 15.1-inch unit body at 22.7 lb. The Canadian width is 15.9 inches; those nominal edition/rounding differences do not provide an exact enclosure tolerance. Allow extra room for the scanner lid, extended paper, rear output and service access. The guide distinguishes 110–127V and 220–240V versions and sends frequency/current confirmation to the physical rating label, so full US mains compatibility remains unverified.
