Sharp AL-1540CS review

Identify the feeder and bypass before comparing features

The Sharp AL-1540CS combines monochrome laser printing and copying with USB color capture. It has a Legal-capable original glass, a 30-sheet ordinary document feeder, one 250-sheet paper drawer and a single-sheet bypass. Those details separate it from the other machines in its shared original operating guide.

In particular, AL-1551CS has the reversing document feeder, additional paper drawer and multi-bypass arrangement. Its automatic two-sided-copy chapter is explicitly model-specific. Neither a shared picture nor an attractive feature elsewhere in the manual makes that equipment standard on AL-1540CS.

Computer scanning needs USB and the actual application

The original installation chapter restricts scanning to USB with the supported Windows environment. Parallel supports printing only. Establish the USB scanner driver and application before expecting a computer that can print to capture documents as well.

Sharp supplies a TWAIN/WIA arrangement, Sharpdesk and Button Manager. A panel scan key uses a configured application destination. The guide's fax destination refers to an installed computer fax program, not a built-in telephone fax connection.

Panel-started feeder scanning also has a specific restriction: only one original may be placed unless Sharpdesk is being used. That matters when the intended task is a multi-page packet. Check the actual application, saved page count and file order instead of treating feeder capacity as a promise about every capture program.

Historic Windows versions identify the original supported installation. They do not establish a working driver on every current computer. Verify the complete print-and-capture workflow before assigning daily records to an earlier machine.

Legal glass and feeder capture are documented

The computer capture instructions use the original glass or feeder and refer to the original-placement section. That section supports originals up to 8.5 by 14 inches on either route, providing useful ordinary Letter and Legal capture.

The glass is the alternative for suitable bound, folded or damaged originals that should not pass through the feeder. Suitable loose originals belong within the feeder's stated weight, size and condition restrictions. Remove clips and flatten curled pages before feeding.

The color CCD can capture color information while the printer produces monochrome output. Ordinary feeder capture does not establish automatic two-sided scanning; the reversing mechanism documented for AL-1551CS is not borrowed here.

The bypass is one attended position

The 250-sheet drawer and individual bypass give a modest ordinary input reserve. Both support appropriate Letter and Legal paper. The larger multi-bypass capacity shown in the shared instructions belongs to another exact model.

Material matters as well as sheet size. The heavier end of the bypass range is limited to Letter maximum. A generally Legal-capable path therefore does not establish Legal handling for every heavy stock. Appropriate envelopes and special media feed individually under their own restrictions.

Sharp warns against introducing bypass paper during an active drawer-fed copy job, and its interrupt-copying behavior also differs for a print job using the individual bypass. Coordinate these attended tasks rather than inserting sheets while another person is using the machine.

Keep print speed, supplies and space separate

The original table gives a maximum of 12 printing pages per minute on Letter or A4, while AL-1540CS copying has a different rate. The copy figure should not be used as computer-print performance or as a monthly workload recommendation.

Inspect the separate TD and drum supplies and allow the full working footprint. The weight declaration excludes those cartridges, and body dimensions alone do not include every operating clearance. Verify the electrical label, actual software and paper condition before relying on the installation.
