Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can the documented USB workflow combine ordinary Legal color capture from both original routes with 550 suitable Legal input positions when all paper sources hold Legal?
Yes. The exact manual supports Legal in both included drawers and the ordinary bypass, and the USB scan procedure uses both Legal-capable original routes. Mixed-size loading changes the available capacity for each size.
Explore this need in the finder →Does its two-sided copy mode meet a requirement for automatic desktop printing on both sides?
No confirmed desktop print-duplex route is established by the copy chapter. The copy function and its source restrictions are documented separately.
Explore this need in the finder →Can an Ethernet requirement be satisfied by this ordinary USB and parallel configuration?
No. An included Ethernet interface is not established, and the original scanner connection is explicitly USB-only.
Explore this need in the finder →Two ordinary drawers are actually included
The Sharp AL-1642CS is an earlier monochrome laser MFP with color-capable USB capture, a Legal-capable glass and a 30-sheet document feeder. Its exact operating manual identifies two standard 250-sheet drawers, plus a multi-bypass holding up to 50 suitable sheets. That is a real difference in its ordinary paper arrangement, rather than an optional expansion silently counted in the total.
The extra drawer can reduce paper changes, but capacity still needs a particular meaning. If one drawer holds Letter and the other Legal, the entire combined count is not available for either individual size. A full same-size reserve assumes the relevant sources are loaded and configured for that size.
Match the source and material to the job
The original ordinary-paper table supports Letter and Legal in both drawers and the multi-bypass. It also imposes different weight limits on the bypass. At the heavier end of that range, Letter is the maximum size, so Legal support for ordinary stock does not establish Legal support for every heavy material.
Appropriate envelopes, labels and transparencies feed individually. The multi-bypass headline is not a promise that a stack of every special medium can feed automatically. Set the actual paper size and media preferences before sending the job, and use the specified output handling.
A smaller sheet loaded under a larger application size can leave image material on the drum and affect later output, according to the guide. A short check after changing paper is therefore useful for both layout and cleanliness.
Computer capture is a USB function
The actual specification explicitly separates printer connections from scanner connections. Printing supports USB or parallel, while scanning requires USB. A working parallel print installation is not a complete multifunction computer arrangement.
Sharp documents TWAIN/WIA software, Sharpdesk and Button Manager. The scanner button depends on the selected application and the Windows event association. Establish that real destination and inspect the saved result, rather than assuming that pressing the button completes a file workflow.
The original supported scan systems are historic Windows versions. Confirm the exact driver and application on the computer intended for daily use. A software destination named fax also means an installed computer fax program, not an analog fax interface inside the machine.
Legal originals fit the glass and ordinary feeder
The computer scan procedure places originals on the glass or SPF and refers to the original-placement instructions. Those support originals up to 8.5 by 14 inches on both routes. This makes the Legal-capable glass useful for suitable originals that should not travel through a feeder.
The feeder supports up to 30 suitable originals, but panel-started capture has an application restriction: only one original may be placed unless using Sharpdesk. Verify the actual packet workflow and saved page count. Ordinary feeder capture does not establish automatic two-sided capture or single-pass duplex mechanics.
Two-sided copying does not establish desktop duplex
The copying chapter describes two-sided output from one-sided originals, with separate binding choices. Its glass routine requires Letter paper, and the multi-bypass is excluded from that two-sided-copy mode.
That operating evidence is kept with copying. It does not establish automatic two-sided printing from every desktop application. The computer print-duplex route therefore remains unconfirmed here.
Allow room for a taller installation
The exact body is taller than a single-drawer arrangement, and the guide separately declares a larger overall working width. Allow feeder, glass, paper and service access. The stated weight excludes the TD and drum cartridges.
Keep the declared 12-page Letter print rate separate from the 16-page copy figure and from first-page behavior. Inspect the separate supplies and electrical label; neither consumable life nor engine speed establishes a recommended monthly workload.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
The exact table declares 12 pages/minute printing on 8.5 × 11-inch Letter, separately from 16 pages/minute copying. Its print footnote describes second and later sheets during continuous one-sided printing of the same page from tray 1. No maker recommended monthly interval or maximum duty is established.
Paper handling
The exact included configuration has two 250-sheet drawers and a multi-bypass holding up to 50 suitable sheets. The ordinary paper table supports Letter and Legal in all three sources, giving up to 550 conditional positions when the sources are configured for the same chosen size. If the drawers hold different sizes, their counts cannot both be credited to one size. Special media and envelopes feed individually; the heavier bypass range is limited to Letter maximum. Two-sided copying is documented, but desktop print duplex remains unconfirmed.
Scanning arrangement
The exact model has a color CCD, a Legal-capable glass and a 30-sheet SPF. The actual USB computer capture instructions use either original route and refer to the original-placement chapter, which supports up to 8.5 × 14-inch Legal. Ordinary Letter/Legal flatbed and simplex feeder capture are retained. Panel-started feeder scanning accepts one original unless using Sharpdesk. Automatic duplex capture and single-pass duplex mechanics are unconfirmed.
Computer and mobile connections
The original specification positively restricts computer scanning to USB. USB1.1 and printer-only parallel are documented. No included Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct or native mobile protocol is established. A fax application in the software destination list is not an integrated fax interface.
Supplies and declared yields
The original table names AL-110TD toner/developer with an approximately 4,000-Letter-page declaration at 5% toned area, while the factory-included declaration is around 2,000. AL-100DR is a separate drum with an approximately 18,000-sheet declaration. Actual supplies and service condition need inspection; none of these estimates is monthly duty.
Software and support
The guide describes SHARP GDI printing, TWAIN/WIA scanning, Sharpdesk and Button Manager. The supported original scan installation uses USB and Windows98/Me/2000/XP; Windows95/NT4.0 and parallel are print-only. Panel events need actual application association and installed software. Check the exact driver on a present computer. A queued print job resumes under the documented online/clear behavior after copying; scanner access is not concurrent with copying.
Electrical edition and setup
The US/Canada original guide specifies 120 V, 60 Hz. Exact unit-body dimensions are 20.4 × 19.4 × 18.3 inches. A separate overall width of 23.9 inches should inform operating clearance, together with feeder, glass and paper access. Weight explicitly excludes TD and drum cartridges, so complete loaded weight remains unknown. Both ordinary drawers belong to this exact configuration.
