A useful fit for

A small document workspace needing ordinary Letter or Legal duplex and protected jobs from a compatible computer driver.

The main tradeoff

It has no scanner or fax, and the manual slot holds one sheet rather than a second stack.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a Wi-Fi computer print monochrome Legal documents automatically on both sides and hold them for a PIN?

Yes, using a compatible driver on the configured infrastructure network. Legal fits the main tray and duplex path; set the duplex unit to Letter for Legal. The current guide provides the Confidential PIN submission and button-panel release steps.

Does the family Print and Scan software let this model scan documents to a USB-connected computer?

No. B230 is print-only and has no scanner. Choose an actual multifunction model such as B225 or B235 when document capture is essential.

Can my phone use basic AirPrint while the printer connects through Ethernet?

Yes, on a suitable shared network with the Apple device and printer discoverable on the same network/subnet. The Ethernet connection does not require the printer to use its Wi-Fi radio. Available phone controls remain app-dependent.

A small printer for black-and-white document work

The Xerox B230/DNI is a compact monochrome laser for a desk or small shared workspace that needs printing without an attached scanner. Its included USB, Ethernet and Wi-Fi connections support several installation choices, while automatic duplex and Confidential Print can make everyday document work more practical.

The deciding limitation is straightforward: this is the print-only member of the B230/B225/B235 family. It cannot capture a paper original, make a standalone copy or send a native fax. Choose B225 or B235 when those document functions matter, rather than expecting a family software package to add scanner hardware.

Choose the computer and mobile arrangements separately

For one computer, the rear USB Type B connection provides a direct printing route with suitable software. Ethernet serves a wired network, and the US DNI package also includes 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi for an infrastructure network. Confirm a compatible current driver and the printer's firmware before relying on particular job controls.

AirPrint and Mopria provide basic printing from suitable mobile devices on a shared network. The printer can use Ethernet while a phone uses the network's Wi-Fi. AirPrint requires the device and printer on the same network, and the same subnet where multiple wireless hubs are involved.

Wi-Fi Direct is a different arrangement: configure the printer's peer network, then join it from the device before printing. It avoids an access point for that connection, but does not guarantee every desktop driver setting in every mobile application.

Use the tray for ordinary paper and the slot for exceptions

The standard main tray takes 250 sheets and the manual slot takes one, based on 20 lb/75 gsm stock. That is 251 included sheet positions, with only one full paper stack. A single-sheet slot is useful for an occasional special page; it is not a second 250-sheet tray.

Letter, A4 and Legal fit both sources and the automatic duplex path. For Letter or Legal duplex, the manual instructs users to set the duplex unit to Letter; A4 needs its corresponding setting. Match the loaded size and media type at the printer and in the driver.

Tray and ordinary duplex stock have a 60–105 gsm range. The manual slot's wider 60–200 gsm range does not extend the duplex limit. Envelopes, labels and card stock use that manual source one-sided. Set the exact envelope format and type, feed one at a time, and follow the flap-down orientation against the left guide.

Release Confidential jobs through the buttons

A small button-operated panel does not rule out protected printing. The March 2026 guide gives a complete Windows routine: select Print and Hold, assign a username, choose Confidential and enter a PIN before submitting the document.

At the printer, navigate through Held jobs, the username and Confidential, then enter the PIN, select the job and choose Print. Use OK to move through the menus. Mac AirPrint has a separately documented PIN Printing option with a four-digit code. Confirm the actual driver or application supports the intended route.

Repeat, Reserve and Verify jobs have different purposes. A document waiting in a held-job menu is not necessarily protected by a code. Configure confidential-job retention and failed-PIN limits to suit the shared workspace, rather than relying on the default settings without review.

Keep speed and monthly workload in perspective

The US brochure declares up to 36 one-sided monochrome Letter pages per minute or 34 A4 pages per minute under ISO/IEC 24734. These are different paper-size figures, and neither is a promise of 36 completed two-sided sheets each minute.

Xerox's B230 specifications recommend up to 2,500 pages per month. The separate 30,000-page maximum duty figure describes a peak ceiling, not the recommended routine workload. A business regularly approaching that ceiling should compare a model with a suitable documented monthly recommendation and larger ordinary input.

Allow access and budget for separate supplies

The brochure body measures approximately 14 inches wide, 13.1 deep and 9.1 high at 15 pounds. Allow additional room for paper loading, output, covers and cartridge changes. The store's larger shipping weight describes the parcel, not the printer body.

The included starter is declared at 700 pages. Replacement toner declarations are 1,200, 3,000 and 6,000 average standard pages under ISO/IEC 19752, with actual yield affected by coverage and print mode. The imaging kit is a separate service item. Check regional cartridge compatibility, actual electrical labeling and software support when choosing a unit.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

The US brochure declares up to 36 one-sided monochrome Letter or 34 A4 pages/min under ISO/IEC 24734. This is not the duplex sheet rate. The maker’s B230 specifications recommend up to 2,500 pages/month, with no minimum stated; 30,000 is maximum monthly duty and is not a sustained workload recommendation.

Paper handling

The main tray holds 250 ordinary sheets and the manual slot one at 20 lb / 75 gsm, totaling 251 included positions. Both accept Letter, Legal and A4, which also have automatic print duplex support. Plain tray and duplex stock is 60–105 gsm; the manual slot has a separate 60–200 gsm range. Set the duplex unit to Letter for Letter/Legal or to A4 for A4. Envelopes, labels and card stock use the manual source one-sided with their own size/type settings. No envelope stack is included.

Scanning arrangement

B230 is a monochrome print-only device. It has no scanner, copy engine or native fax. A family software name or generic Mopria Scan listing does not add scanning hardware.

Computer and mobile connections

The exact US DNI package includes USB Type B, 10/100 Ethernet and 802.11 b/g/n infrastructure Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi Direct is a separately configured peer network. Basic AirPrint and Mopria use a compatible mobile device and suitable shared Ethernet/Wi-Fi network; Direct printing has a separate joining routine. Desktop driver controls are not automatically available in every mobile app.

Supplies and declared yields

The supplied starter declaration is 700 pages. Replacement toner is 006R04399 at 1,200, 006R04400 at 3,000 or 006R04401 at 6,000 average standard pages under ISO/IEC 19752; actual yield varies with coverage and mode. Imaging kit 013R00691 has a separate approximate 12,000-page declaration affected by job length and media. No current cost per page is asserted.

Software and support

The March 2026 guide documents Windows Print and Hold > Confidential, username and PIN, followed by Held jobs > user > Confidential > PIN > job > Print at the physical button panel, using OK through menus. Mac AirPrint PIN Printing separately specifies four digits. Other held-job types do not necessarily require a PIN. Confirm current firmware, driver and operating-system support for the intended routine.

Electrical edition and setup

US B230/DNI identity is established by the manufacturer’s exact SKU page. The brochure body is 14 in wide, 13.1 deep and 9.1 high at 15 lb; the shop’s 22 lb is shipping weight. Allow rear, tray, output and cartridge access beyond body dimensions. Verify the actual unit’s electrical label and current software before setup.
