A useful fit for

A compatible small office needing both sides of loose Legal originals captured automatically alongside ordinary monochrome duplex output.

The main tradeoff

The glass fits Letter/A4, extra input is optional, and published duplex-original paper-weight limits need checking against the actual stock.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can Ethernet support Legal single-pass color scanning, Legal monochrome print duplex, 350 included sheets and fax?

Yes, with compatible computer software, suitable feeder originals and the configured network. B315 has the single-pass DADF; the glass is shorter. Fax separately needs its active configured analog line. Check the published duplex-original weight discrepancy against your stock.

Can a USB computer use the glass for a full Legal original?

No. USB computer scanning is documented, but the glass is limited to 8.5 by 11.7 inches. Legal fits the feeder. A fragile Legal original needs a model with an explicitly larger glass.

Does the Wi-Fi base package include 900 sheets of ordinary Letter input?

No. Included capacity is 350 sheets at 75 gsm. Reaching 900 requires the optional 550-sheet drawer installed, so it is not an included base capability.

Monochrome output with a more capable document feeder

The Xerox B315/DNI is a monochrome laser MFP for a small office that needs printing, copying, computer scanning and separately configured analog fax. Its useful distinction within the B310/B305/B315 family is the single-pass duplex automatic document feeder: suitable two-sided originals can be captured without manually turning the stack.

That scanner does not make color printed pages. B315 captures color files while its printing remains black and white. The print-only B310 has no scanner, and the B305's feeder is a different arrangement. Check the exact model when comparing a family listing or a reused machine.

Send loose Legal originals through the single-pass feeder

The DADF supports Letter, A4 and Legal originals and reads both sides in one pass. Its headline capacity is 50 sheets at 75 gsm, with a 6.5 mm maximum stack reference. Load suitable sheets face up, align their leading edges and adjust the guides.

Check the original's paper weight before planning a two-sided batch. Xerox's current guide and general scan table list 60–90 gsm, while the detailed duplex-specific row gives 90 gsm as both the minimum and maximum. That difference should be confirmed for the actual stock. Ninety gsm falls within all the published rows, but the 50-sheet capacity is specifically based on lighter 75 gsm stock.

Use the glass for a suitable book page, small item or fragile original. Its maximum is 8.5 by 11.7 inches, covering Letter and A4. A full Legal page fits the feeder, not the glass. Choose an explicitly larger glass if the document must remain flat.

Install capture for the intended computer connection

The US specification explicitly supports scanning to a USB- or network-connected computer, with TWAIN, WIA and ICA compatibility. Rear USB Type B is the computer cable connection. The front thumbdrive routine is separate and saves supported files to a memory device.

For network capture, the guide requires updated firmware, an installed printer and the computer on the same network. It describes Windows Fax and Scan with source selection and Mac Image Capture with a Document Feeder option. Use suitable software and select the required sides, size and output color.

Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi are included in the DNI package. Basic AirPrint and Mopria printing can use a suitable shared network, including a printer connected by Ethernet. Wi-Fi Direct is a separate peer connection; advanced capture and protected-job controls need their own compatible software arrangement.

Keep standard input separate from expansion

The included 250-sheet main tray and 100-sheet multipurpose feeder total 350 ordinary sheets at 20 lb/75 gsm. Letter, A4 and Legal fit both sources and automatic print duplex. An optional 550-sheet drawer increases total input to 900 only when installed.

Ordinary print duplex has a 60–90 gsm range. The main tray's wider simplex limit and the multipurpose feeder's 60–217 gsm range do not extend that duplex ceiling. Envelopes use the multipurpose feeder one-sided, with the correct format and type selected. Follow the flap-down orientation on the left, and avoid unsuitable closures or adhesives.

Configure private printing and the telephone line

A compatible Windows driver offers Secure Print with a passcode. The guide separately documents Mac driver and AirPrint Confidential routines using a four-digit PIN, followed by release through Held jobs, the computer name, Confidential and the selected job at the panel. Confirm the available controls in the actual software.

Native fax requires an active analog line connected to LINE and the appropriate fax setup. Auto Answer and the number of rings must suit that line. Ethernet or Wi-Fi does not supply telephone service; digital telephone systems and service adapters have separate conditions.

Plan monthly use and verify the supplied toner

The declared US print rate is up to 42 one-sided Letter or 40 A4 pages per minute under ISO/IEC 24734. Duplex print and scanner image rates are separate. Recommended monthly volume is up to 6,000 pages, distinct from the 80,000-page maximum duty ceiling.

The current exact US package page lists a 1,500-page starter, while the older detailed box list says 2,500. Confirm the actual carton. Replacement toner declarations are 3,000, 8,000 or 20,000 pages, with a separate imaging kit. The standard body is about 16.2 inches wide, 14.4 deep and 13.3 high at 28.2 pounds. Allow additional operating access and check the electrical label before installation.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

US print declarations are up to 42 one-sided monochrome Letter or 40 A4 pages/min under ISO/IEC 24734, with a separate 18 ppm duplex figure. Letter scanner rates are 48/96 monochrome and 21/42 color images/min for simplex/duplex; these are images, not printed sheets. Recommended monthly volume is up to 6,000 without a stated minimum, distinct from 80,000 maximum duty.

Paper handling

Included ordinary input is a 250-sheet tray plus 100-sheet multipurpose feeder at 20 lb / 75 gsm, totaling 350. Letter, Legal and A4 fit both and the automatic print duplex path. Print duplex is 60–90 gsm; the main tray has a separate 60–120 gsm simplex range and multipurpose feeder 60–217 gsm. Envelopes use the multipurpose feeder one-sided; the guide excludes them from the main tray and duplex despite a broad specification media list. Optional 550-sheet input is excluded from the standard 350.

Scanning arrangement

B315 has a 50-sheet single-pass DADF at 75 gsm and a 6.5 mm maximum stack reference. It reads both sides of Letter, Legal and A4 automatically; the glass supports Letter/A4 to 8.5 x 11.7 in. Color and monochrome ADF resolution is up to 600 x 600 dpi. Current guide and general detailed table list 60–90 gsm originals, while the detailed duplex-specific row gives 90 gsm as both minimum and maximum. Treat two-sided paper-weight limits as requiring confirmation for the actual originals; 90 gsm lies within all published rows. The 50-sheet headline does not promise 50 heavier originals.

Computer and mobile connections

US DNI includes USB Type B, 10/100 Ethernet and 802.11 b/g/n infrastructure Wi-Fi. USB and network computer scanning are explicitly documented, with compatible TWAIN/WIA/ICA software. The network guide requires same-network discovery, installed device and updated firmware, and describes Windows Fax and Scan or Mac Image Capture. USB thumbdrive capture is a separate front-port routine. Wi-Fi Direct is separate basic peer printing; advanced capture and driver controls are not presumed.

Supplies and declared yields

The current exact US B315/DNI page lists a 1,500-page starter, while the older detailed box list states 2,500; confirm the actual package. North American replacement declarations are 3,000 for 006R04376, 8,000 for 006R04377 and 20,000 for 006R04378. The maker’s monochrome detailed footnote labels its declaration ISO/IEC 19798; that unusual label is retained as a source issue rather than silently replaced. Imaging kit 013R00690 has a separate approximate 40,000-page declaration affected by job length and media. No measured yield or current cost per page is claimed.

Software and support

Windows Secure Print accepts a passcode in compatible driver job settings. The manual also provides complete Mac driver and AirPrint Confidential PIN submission and panel release, with a four-digit code and Held jobs > computer > Confidential > PIN > job > Print. Confirm controls in the actual driver/app. Native fax separately needs LINE connected to an active analog telephone jack, fax enabled/configured and appropriate auto-answer/rings settings. A digital telephone or generic cloud service is not an equivalent promised path.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US B315/DNI identity is established by the manufacturer SKU page. The standard body is approximately 16.2 in wide, 14.4 deep and 13.3 high at 28.2 lb, without the optional drawer; 33 lb on the shop page is shipping weight. Allow extra scanner, feeder, tray and cartridge access. North American and 220–240 V editions are separate; verify the actual unit label and intended telephone service.
