Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can Ethernet print Legal monochrome documents with 600 included sheets for 3000-page months?
Yes. N includes 100-sheet multipurpose and 500-sheet main sources supporting ordinary Legal. The current US monthly headline is 4,000, and the original Letter simplex rate is 40 pages/min. Automatic duplex remains optional.
Explore this need in the finder →Does a standard 3600N automatically print both sides of Letter sheets over USB?
No. The exact configuration table makes the duplex module optional for N; DN includes it. An installed add-on must be verified separately.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I rely on passcode-held jobs on the standard 128 MB N without checking its configuration?
That is unverified. Xerox positively describes Secure Print, but its menu and software instructions disagree about the 128 MB threshold. Verify actual installed memory, Secure Print menu and driver before using it for confidential jobs.

The Xerox Phaser 3600N is an earlier monochrome laser printer for compatible computers using USB or a wired Ethernet network. Its standard 100-sheet multipurpose tray and 500-sheet main drawer provide 600 nominal ordinary sheets without buying another feeder.
The N suffix matters. It adds networking and 128 MB memory to the basic family arrangement, but automatic two-sided printing remains optional. The neighboring 3600DN includes the duplex module. Neither variant is a scanner, copier or fax machine.
Two paper sources, with optional duplex kept separate
The normal trays support Letter, Legal and A4. The main drawer accepts ordinary paper within the documented 60–105 gsm range; the multipurpose tray has a broader 60–163 gsm range and custom sizes from 76 by 127 mm to 216 by 356 mm. Match size and media type at the printer and in the driver before printing.
The 600-sheet total is a nominal paper capacity, with a precise full-count stock basis unestablished. The extra 500-sheet feeder is optional. A family accessory description mentioning three additional trays conflicts with the exact configuration table's 1,100-sheet maximum, so it is not a basis for a larger standard arrangement.
For occasional envelopes, the original instructions use the multipurpose feed one at a time, with the flap down and stamp position at the top left. Select the actual envelope size and type. Use suitable paper envelopes compatible with fuser heat, avoiding windows, metal clasps and unsupported adhesive construction. Ordinary-paper capacity is not an envelope-stack allowance.
If automatic duplex is essential, choose a documented included-duplex configuration such as 3600DN or verify the actual optional module on the N in front of you. A used printer's suffix, installed hardware and driver settings all need to agree.
Network printing does not establish phone printing
USB 2.0 provides a direct compatible computer connection. The N also includes 10/100 Base-TX Ethernet for a configured network, plus the original parallel connection. The manual identifies that interface as IEEE 1284; an evaluator-table line saying IEEE 1394 Parallel should not be read as a FireWire feature.
A wireless adapter was optional. Native AirPrint and Mopria are unestablished, so Ethernet alone does not justify a phone-printing promise. Check driver availability for the actual operating system before making an older printer central to daily work.
Secure Print has an unresolved memory condition
Xerox's evaluator lists Secure Print on the 128 MB N, while the original menu instructions require memory larger than 128 MB. The Mac software instructions instead say 128 MB or higher. These are materially different conditions for the standard configuration.
The feature itself is positively documented. With the appropriate configuration and driver, choose Secure Print in Job Settings and assign the user identity, job name and passcode. At the printer, use the Secure Print release menu and enter the matching identity and code. Delete is a separate action; the retention setting defaults to 24 hours and can extend to 72 hours, while ReleaseAll changes whether matching jobs are released together.
Because the base-memory threshold is unresolved, verify installed memory, the actual panel menu and the supported driver before relying on held jobs for confidential documents. This is uncertainty about standard activation, rather than evidence that Secure Print never existed.
Keep speed and monthly workload in context
The manufacturer declares up to 40 one-sided Letter or 38 A4 pages per minute. Those are source figures, not measured throughput, and optional-duplex rates are separate. They do not establish the time needed for every graphics-heavy file or first page.
The 2010 evaluator recommends up to 8,000 pages per month, whereas the current exact US reference page gives 4000. Both statements are retained here; use the lower current headline for ordinary planning. The 200,000-page duty figure is a separate maximum distributed over 30 days, not the recommended regular workload.
Check supplies, power and the actual body
The original US package lists a 7,000-page supplied cartridge and USB cable. Replacement 106R01370 is declared at 7,000 pages, with 106R01371 at 14,000 under ISO/IEC 19752. Actual yield varies with image coverage and mode; old package contents do not establish what remains in a particular used machine.
The US configuration list explicitly identifies 3600/N as 110 V. Physical figures conflict: the 2010 evaluator gives 399 by 478 by 383 mm and 17.9 kg, while the 2008 guide gives 396 by 476 by 375 mm and 19.7 kg net. Verify the actual body and power label, allowing extra paper-loading, cover, output and ventilation room.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Xerox declares one-sided output up to 40 Letter or 38 A4 pages/min; this is not measured throughput. The original guide separately gives 27 Letter / 26 A4 images/min for an installed duplex configuration, not the base N. The 2010 US evaluator recommends up to 8,000 pages/month, while the current exact US page says 4000; both are preserved and the conservative 4000 current headline is used. The 200,000-page duty cycle is a separate maximum distributed over 30 days, not a recommended workload.
Paper handling
N includes a 100-sheet MPT and 500-sheet main drawer, nominal 600 ordinary sheets, supporting Letter, Legal and A4. MPT custom 76 x 127 to 216 x 356 mm/60–163 gsm; main selectable Letter to Legal/A5 to A4/60–105 gsm. The full-count stock basis is unestablished. The optional 500-sheet Tray 3 is excluded. Automatic duplex is optional on N, standard on DN. Special media including suitable paper envelopes are fed one at a time through MPT; for envelopes use flap down and stamp at top left, actual size/type settings and original heat/construction restrictions. No envelope duplex or 600-envelope claim.
Scanning arrangement
Exact US product is a monochrome print-only laser printer without scanner, copier, fax, flatbed or original-document feeder. A generic driver-suite Print and Scan label is not scanner hardware.
Computer and mobile connections
N includes direct USB 2.0 computer printing and 10/100 Base-TX Ethernet network printing, plus original IEEE 1284 parallel. An evaluator-page IEEE 1394 Parallel typo is not evidence of FireWire. Wireless adapter is optional. Native AirPrint and Mopria are unestablished; original PC/Mac drivers require compatibility verification for the actual operating system.
Supplies and declared yields
Original US evaluator lists a supplied 7,000-page print cartridge and USB cable. Replacement 106R01370 is declared at 7,000 standard pages and 106R01371 at 14,000 under ISO/IEC 19752, varying with image area coverage and mode. These are manufacturer declarations, not current stock, actual remaining life, measured yield or a used-unit contents promise.
Software and support
Exact N has 128 MB standard memory expandable to 512 MB. The evaluator lists Secure Print for N, but original menu documentation requires memory larger than 128 MB while Mac software says 128 MB or higher. Base Secure Print availability is therefore unestablished, not asserted absent. With the supported configuration/driver, select Secure Print in Job Settings, assign UserID/JobName/passcode, then use Secure Print Release at the panel; Delete is separate, default retention 24 h/max 72 h, and ReleaseAll changes matching-job behavior. Numeric passcode length is unestablished. Verify installed memory, menu and driver before confidential use.
Electrical edition and setup
The original US list explicitly identifies 3600/N as 110 V. Body measurements remain unknown for filtering because the 2010 evaluator lists 399 x 478 x 383 mm / 17.9 kg while the 2008 original guide lists 396 x 476 x 375 mm / net 19.7 kg for N/B; the guide separately labels gross 23.5 kg. Neither carton weight nor the deeper DN body is substituted. Inspect exact power label, installed duplex/memory/trays and actual body, with extra operating and ventilation clearance.
