Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can Ethernet print Legal monochrome documents with passcode release and 650 included ordinary sheets for 20,000-page months?
Yes under the later exact US configuration. It specifies 100 + 550 sheets at 80 gsm, and ordinary Legal is supported. Secure Print works without the optional disk. The older guide says 520 main sheets, a documented edition difference; the current US ordinary monthly headline is 30,000.
Explore this need in the finder →Can USB offer included secure release and a declared 55 ppm one-sided Letter rate?
Yes with a compatible computer driver and permitted settings. The original guide makes Secure Print available on all configurations, and the US table explicitly confirms diskless secure release. Letter simplex is 55 pages/min; 52 is A4, while 65 belongs to 4620.
Explore this need in the finder →Does standard 4600N automatically duplex ordinary Letter sheets?
No. The exact N column makes the duplex module optional; DN includes it. Included Secure Print and standard Gigabit Ethernet do not add automatic two-sided hardware.
Explore this need in the finder →Included secure release, with duplex still optional
The Xerox Phaser 4600N is an earlier monochrome laser printer with USB, Gigabit Ethernet and passcode-held Secure Print in the standard configuration. Its important tradeoff is that automatic two-sided printing remains optional. A confidential-job requirement and a duplex requirement therefore produce different answers for this exact suffix.
The later US configuration table lists a 100-sheet multipurpose source and a 550-sheet main drawer, totaling 650 ordinary sheets at 80 gsm. DN adds the duplex unit, while DT adds another drawer. The printer itself has no scanner, copier or fax.
Secure Print does not require the optional disk
Xerox's original US comparison explicitly says Secure Print works without a hard drive. The user guide confirms Normal Print and Secure Print on all configurations. The optional 160 GB disk is required for Sample Set, Personal Print, Delay Print and Saved Job instead.
In a compatible driver, select Secure Print and enter the intended passcode. At the printer, open Menu, Jobs and Personal & Secure Jobs, choose the user name and enter the same code. Then select Print All or an individual job and confirm the requested action.
The guide warns that secure jobs sharing a code may be released together. Keep that behavior in mind when submitting several confidential files. A fixed code length and retention after power loss remain unestablished here; the documented held-job routine does not promise persistent disk storage on the base N.
Check the paper edition and actual drawer
Letter, Legal and A4 are positively supported in both included paper sources. Match the guides, panel size/type settings and driver selection before sending a job. The normal multipurpose and main-drawer media limits differ, so specialty stock should not inherit the ordinary-paper routine automatically.
There is a real source difference in capacity. The 2010 guide lists 520 main-drawer sheets at its stated 80 gsm basis, while the later 2014 US configuration table specifies 550 at 80 gsm. This assessment uses the later exact US total of 650 and preserves the earlier figure. Check the actual installed drawer and loading line when evaluating a particular machine.
Extra drawers, the high-capacity feeder, finisher and mailbox are optional. They are excluded from the standard count. The family comparison's general duplex rows also do not override the exact N column, which lacks the included duplex module.
Occasional envelopes have a smaller allowance
The bypass instructions allow at most ten suitable envelopes, loaded print side up against the right edge after removing curl. Choose the actual envelope format and media type and the appropriate driver source. Use laser-compatible paper construction, with no windows or metal clasps.
That small envelope routine is separate from the ordinary 650-sheet total. Envelopes do not inherit automatic duplex, even if an optional module has been installed for ordinary documents.
Connect the computer through the correct port
USB 2.0 provides direct compatible computer printing. Ethernet supports a configured network and the CentreWare Internet Services management interface. The front USB flash-device port is a separate host function, and the original US comparison specifically excludes a parallel interface.
Internal wireless is optional. Native AirPrint and Mopria remain unestablished for this model; Bonjour discovery and a PC Mobile Express Driver entry do not establish phone-native printing. Verify the actual operating system, driver and administrator settings before adopting an earlier unit.
Keep Letter speed and ordinary monthly volume distinct
The original guide and US comparison declare 55 one-sided Letter pages per minute and 52 A4. The US table separately gives 45 Legal. The neighboring 4620 has a different 65 Letter headline. These manufacturer figures are not measured throughput, and optional-duplex rates do not describe standard N operation.
The current US reference page gives up to 30,000 pages per month. The 275,000-page duty figure is explicitly a maximum for one month that is not expected to be sustained regularly.
Verify supplies, power and body clearance
Family replacement toner is declared at 13,000 or 30,000 standard pages under ISO/IEC 19752. Exact US starter yields remain unestablished; regional starter information does not prove an American package's contents. The US 110 V maintenance kit is also distinct from the regional 220 V kit.
The exact US configuration list identifies 4600/N as 110 V. The original guide gives a 476 by 541 by 420 mm body, approximately 18.74 by 21.30 by 16.54 inches, at about 77.16 pounds. Its weight is slightly higher than the regional brochure's 34.6 kg figure. Allow additional paper-loading, output, open-cover, service and ventilation room.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Original US comparison and actual user guide declare 55 one-sided Letter or 52 A4 pages/min for 4600, with the US comparison separately giving 45 Legal. The neighboring 4620 has 65 Letter/62 A4, outside this N rate. Optional-duplex rates do not apply to the standard simplex N. The current exact US family page gives up to 30,000 pages/month. Maximum 275,000 duty is explicitly a one-month maximum not intended to be sustained regularly. The regional paid A4 headline of 52 is not a Letter rate; no measured performance claim.
Paper handling
The later 2014 exact US N configuration table includes a 100-sheet MPT plus 550-sheet main Tray 2, totaling 650 at 80 gsm. The older 2010 guide gives 520 main sheets at the same stated 80 gsm basis; this conflict is retained and the later exact US 650 used. Both included trays positively support ordinary Letter, Legal and A4. The guide allows 60–216 gsm MPT and 60–163 gsm main stock, with 220 gsm MPT in the later brochure; the narrower ordinary guide limit is retained. Automatic duplex, additional drawers, HCF, finisher and mailbox are optional on N. Suitable paper envelopes can use the MPT with at most 10, print side up, right-edge alignment, actual size/type and driver-source settings; no 650-envelope or envelope-duplex claim.
Scanning arrangement
A monochrome print-only laser printer without scanning, copying, fax, glass or an original-document feeder. Optional blank-paper feeders and front USB flash-device printing are not scanning hardware.
Computer and mobile connections
Included USB 2.0 supports direct compatible computer printing; 10/100/1000 Ethernet supports a configured network and CentreWare Internet Services. USB computer/device and front USB flash-host routes are distinct. The original US comparison explicitly has no parallel port. Internal wireless is optional. Native AirPrint/Mopria are unestablished; later 4622 AirPrint support, Bonjour discovery and Mobile Express Driver do not establish those protocols on 4600. Actual OS/driver and administrator policies require verification.
Supplies and declared yields
Original family replacement toner 106R01533 is declared at 13,000 standard pages and 106R01535 at 30,000 under ISO/IEC 19752, varying with content, coverage and mode; the current US 535 listing includes a waste toner bottle. The regional 2014 package lists 10,000-print starter toner and an 80,000-print drum, but exact US included yields remain unestablished. Regional drum 113R00762 has a separate approximate 80,000-page media/usage declaration. Current US 110 V maintenance kit 115R00069 is approximately 150,000 pages, with the fuser based on Letter/A4 20 lb (75 gsm), containing fuser, bias transfer roller and feed rollers; regional 220 V 115R00070 is a different kit. The current 113R00769 GSA drum listing specifically names 4620/4622 and is not assigned to 4600.
Software and support
N includes 256 MB memory, expandable to 768 MB. The original US exact table includes Secure Print and explicitly states it works without a hard drive; guide 31 confirms Normal/Secure on all configurations. In a compatible driver, select Secure Print and enter a passcode; at the panel choose Menu, Jobs, Personal & Secure Jobs, the user name, matching passcode, then Print All or an individual job and confirm Yes. Jobs sharing a secure code may be released together. Code length and persistence after power loss are unestablished. Sample Set, Personal Print, Delay Print and Saved Job require the optional 160 GB HDD. PCL and PostScript 3 emulation are documented; 600 x 600 native and 1200 x 1200 enhanced are different specifications.
Electrical edition and setup
Original FCP page 2 identifies exact 4600/N as 110 V; the paid E brochure describes 220–240 V and is not US electrical-edition proof. Original guide 122 gives a base body of 476 x 541 x 420 mm, converted to about 18.74 x 21.30 x 16.54 inches, and approximately 35 kg/77.16 lb; the regional exact N table has 34.6 kg, so the higher guide weight is used with the difference retained. These are machine figures, with precise consumable basis unestablished. Inspect actual power label, options and body, and leave extra paper-loading, output, open-cover, maintenance and ventilation room.
