Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can Ethernet print monochrome Tabloid documents with 1,100 included sheets for 25,000-page months?
Yes. The MPT and two 500-sheet drawers support ordinary Tabloid and total 1,100 at 20 lb (75 gsm). The current US monthly headline is 30,000. The separate Letter simplex rate is 50 pages/min; Tabloid is declared at 28.
Explore this need in the finder →Does standard 5550N automatically duplex A3 pages over USB?
No. Automatic duplex is optional on N and included on DN. Large-format paper support and the Gigabit Ethernet upgrade do not establish the duplex module.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the standard 256 MB N include four-digit held-job release?
No. Secure Print requires the optional Productivity Kit and its 40 GB hard disk. Standard RAM collation and general network-management security do not include that storage.

The Xerox Phaser 5550N combines wired computer printing with ordinary Letter, Legal, A4, A3 and Tabloid paper support. Its standard arrangement has a 100-sheet multipurpose tray and two 500-sheet drawers, giving 1,100 sheets on Xerox's stated 20 lb or 75 gsm basis.
The N suffix adds Gigabit Ethernet to the basic configuration. It leaves automatic duplex and the hard disk optional. That distinction matters when a family photograph shows a taller machine with additional feeders or finishing equipment. The 5550N is also print only, without scanning, copying or fax.
Use each drawer within its actual media limits
The included paper sources positively support the five ordinary sizes above. Keep tray guides, panel size/type settings and driver choices consistent. Separate drawers are useful for keeping standard stocks ready, but do not make every media weight suitable for every source.
The 2014 detailed specification allows 60–215 gsm in the multipurpose source and Tray 3, while Tray 2 is limited to 60–105 gsm. The older guide groups Trays 2–5 under a broader range; use the narrower exact Tray 2 figure when planning that routine. Heavier stock also changes the number of sheets that fit below the loading line.
N does not include the automatic duplex module. Choose a documented DN configuration or verify the actual optional module if two-sided printing is essential. Large-format support, extra memory and network connectivity do not add the return path.
The optional 1,000-sheet and 2,000-sheet feeders are outside the standard 1,100-sheet count. Their size limits also need separate checking; a higher family maximum is not proof that every additional sheet can be Tabloid.
Occasional envelopes use the multipurpose source
The original guide allows suitable paper envelopes through Tray 1. Its maximum envelope stack is 10 mm, with printing on the front only. C4 uses short-edge feed, while Monarch, number 10, C5 and DL use long-edge feed. Place the printable side down with the flap entering first.
Confirm the actual size and Envelope type at the panel, then select the matching type or Tray 1 in the driver. Avoid windows, metal clasps and padding, and protect unused envelopes from moisture.
The optional 65-envelope tray is a different arrangement. It occupies the Tray 2 slot and uses different loading instructions. Its capacity cannot simply be added to the normal 1,100-sheet paper total.
Computer connections and confidential-job storage
USB 2.0 connects a compatible computer directly using the separately obtained A/B cable. Ethernet supports an established network and the CentreWare Internet Services management interface. IEEE 1284 parallel is also documented.
Wireless is optional or external. Native AirPrint and Mopria remain unestablished; a Mobile Express Driver listing refers to computer software and does not prove either phone-native protocol. Check current driver compatibility before adopting an older printer.
Standard memory is 256 MB, expandable to 1 GB. Secure Print requires the optional Productivity Kit and its 40 GB hard drive. With that kit and a suitable driver, the documented secure-job routine requires a four-digit numeric password at the printer. Personal Print and Saved Print have different release and retention behavior. Ordinary RAM collation does not include the disk.
Read workload and speed figures separately
Xerox declares up to 50 one-sided Letter/A4 pages per minute, 33 Legal and 28 Tabloid/A3. Optional-duplex figures are separate. These are manufacturer declarations, with no claim of measured throughput or equal speed on every paper size.
The original 2014 specification recommends up to 50,000 pages per month, while the current US reference page says 30,000. Both are retained here; use the lower current headline for ordinary planning. The separate 300,000-page monthly duty cycle and engine-life figure are different limits.
Check toner, drum and the complete workspace
The original package lists 35,000-print toner and a 60,000-print drum. Replacement toner 106R01294 has an ISO/IEC 19752 declaration, whereas the current drum listing uses an approximate five-page Letter/A4 job basis. Maintenance has its own conditions. These figures do not establish remaining life in a particular older machine.
The exact US list identifies 5550/N as 110 V. Its product body is 25.2 by 20.7 by 19.6 inches at 97.2 pounds; the 145-pound N figure is packaged shipping weight. Allow additional loading, output, open-cover, ventilation and service room beyond those body measurements.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Original US single-sided table declares up to 50 pages/min for 8.5 x 11-inch Letter and A4, 33 for Legal and 28 for Tabloid/A3. Automatic-duplex declarations are separate and require an optional module on N. These are maker rates, not measured throughput. The 2014 detailed specification recommends up to 50,000 pages/month, whereas the current exact US headline says 30,000; both are retained and the lower current 30,000 is used. Maximum monthly duty is separately 300,000, with rated engine life a different figure, not a monthly recommendation.
Paper handling
N includes 100-sheet MPT Tray 1 and two 500-sheet drawers, Trays 2 and 3, totaling 1,100 based on 20 lb (75 gsm) stock. All positively support ordinary Letter, Legal, A4, A3 and Tabloid. Exact 2014 limits are 60–215 gsm MPT/Tray 3 and 60–105 gsm Tray 2; the older guide groups Trays 2–5 at 60–215, so use the narrower exact Tray 2 limit. Standard N does not include automatic duplex, the 1,000/2,000-sheet feeders, envelope tray or finisher. Suitable envelopes use MPT facedown, flap entering first, with C4 short-edge and Monarch/#10/C5/DL long-edge feed; maximum MPT envelope stack is 10 mm, front-side only, with matching size/Envelope settings. Optional 65-envelope tray replaces the Tray 2 slot and has different loading; its capacity cannot be added to standard input.
Scanning arrangement
A monochrome print-only laser printer without scanning, copying, fax, glass or an original-document feeder. Tabloid/A3 output and optional blank-paper feeders do not establish wide-format scanning.
Computer and mobile connections
N includes USB 2.0 direct compatible computer printing, 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet and IEEE 1284 parallel. Ethernet needs the appropriate network, address and driver and supports CentreWare Internet Services management. The original USB A/B cable is obtained separately. Wireless is optional/external; native AirPrint and Mopria are unestablished. Mobile Express Driver is original computer software, not proof of either phone-native protocol.
Supplies and declared yields
The original package lists a toner cartridge at 35,000 print capacity and drum cartridge at 60,000. Replacement toner 106R01294 is declared at 35,000 standard pages under ISO/IEC 19752, varying with content, coverage and mode. Drum 113R00670 is separately listed on the current US page at approximately 60,000 based on average five-page Letter/A4 jobs; do not treat it as an ISO toner test despite the older specification shared footnote. The 110 V maintenance kit 109R00731 is separately about 300,000 with its own three-page Letter/A4 job basis and usage restrictions. No current costs, stock or actual remaining-life promise.
Software and support
Standard memory is 256 MB, expandable to 1 GB, with Adobe PostScript 3 and PCL 5e/PCL 6 emulation. Secure Print requires the optional Productivity Kit with a 40 GB hard drive, so base N passcode release is false. With the kit and compatible driver, Secure Print releases a job after the four-digit numeric password is entered at the panel; Personal Print and Saved Print are different job behaviors. Direct PDF additionally needs 512 MB memory and the disk. Original RAM collation does not add storage; present driver/OS support must be verified.
Electrical edition and setup
Original US configuration list explicitly identifies 5550/N as 110 V. The exact B/N/DN product table gives a body 25.2 inches wide, 20.7 deep and 19.6 high at 97.2 lb; the larger 145 lb N figure is packaged shipping weight. A precise consumable-loading basis for body weight is unestablished. Verify actual label, optional equipment and body, adding loading, output, open-cover, ventilation and maintenance clearance; the taller DT and full finisher arrangement do not share the N footprint.
