Xerox Phaser 7800GX: five paper sources and an included color-management package review

GX combines additional paper sources with color-management equipment

The Xerox Phaser 7800GX is the five-source configuration for users who need several stocks ready in a large-page color printer. Its 100-sheet Tray 1, 520-sheet main tray and three additional 520-sheet drawers provide 2,180 nominal ordinary sheets. Automatic print duplex and a standard hard drive are included.

GX also includes PhaserMatch 5.0 with the PhaserMeter color-measurement device alongside PhaserCal. That package is optional on DN and DX. For an older listing, check that the actual instrument, software and usable entitlement are present; the original bundle specification does not establish the condition or transferable software rights of every machine offered later.

Five sources do not make every media path interchangeable

The original guide explicitly lists Letter, Legal, A4, A3 and Tabloid in all DN/GX trays. The 2,180-sheet declaration is based on 20-pound, 75 gsm stock. Splitting paper among drawers can reduce stock changes, but different weights and specialty media change the practical stack allowance.

Tray 1 handles long banners and the widest range of specialty stock. The main drawer has a smaller maximum custom size, while the added drawers have their own wider range. Define the real source, size and type at the machine and in the driver instead of borrowing a bypass capability for every drawer.

GX's Three Tray Module differs from the DX's High Capacity Tandem Tray. Their nominal totals are 2,180 and 3,140 sheets respectively. A family photograph or a rounded feeder description is not a reason to assign DX's capacity to GX.

Heavy duplex needs an additional kit

Standard automatic two-sided printing supports 75–256 gsm within 128 by 140 mm through 322 by 457 mm. Ordinary Letter, Legal, A4, A3 and Tabloid fit the documented range. GX's extra drawers do not increase that duplex weight limit.

Tray 1 accepts single-sided stock up to 350 gsm. Automatic duplex at 257–300 gsm instead requires the optional Extra Heavy Duty Media Kit and Tray 1. A 350 gsm one-sided headline does not establish automatic two-sided output on the same material.

Envelopes use Tray 1 on one side, with the correct size and Envelope setting. The guide excludes windows, metal clasps, padding, heat-activated glue and press-and-seal flaps. Labels are also one-sided, while supported transparencies use Trays 1 or 2. Ordinary-paper tray counts do not describe these specialty stacks.

Use the standard disk for the appropriate job type

The printer includes 2 GB memory and at least a 160 GB hard drive. Secure Print is a documented driver workflow: associate a four-to-ten-digit code with the job, then at the touchscreen choose Jobs, Personal and Secure Jobs and the assigned private folder. Enter the same code, choose the job and touch Print. The job is deleted from the hard drive afterward.

Sample Set and Saved Job serve different purposes and have different retention behavior. Select the intended routine in a compatible driver and verify the actual drive works. PhaserMeter measures color; it is not a flatbed or document scanner. GX cannot scan, copy or fax.

Confirm computer connectivity and software support

USB 2.0 supports direct computer printing. Gigabit Ethernet provides configured network printing and the embedded CentreWare Internet Services interface. The original setup uses Category 5 or better network cable, initial printer configuration and suitable driver software.

External wireless hardware is optional. Old PrintBack and PC Mobile Express Driver descriptions do not establish native AirPrint or Mopria. Check current operating-system support for both printing and the color-management package before making that software central to a workflow.

Allow for workload, supplies and a substantial machine

The exact US sheet declares up to 45 one-sided Letter pages per minute in either color or monochrome, separately 26 Legal and 22 Tabloid/A3. These are maker ratings, not measured output. Recommended monthly volume is up to 30,000 pages, separate from the explicitly non-sustained 225,000-page peak duty figure.

US supplied toner is declared at 24,000 black and 6,000 pages for each color. High-capacity replacement colors are 17,200 each under ISO/IEC 19798. Imaging, waste, filter and belt-cleaner items have separate maintenance conditions.

The US list establishes the 110 V GX. Its unpackaged body is 25.3 by 27.5 by 37.5 inches and 255.7 pounds. Verify installed equipment and condition, and reserve additional loading, cover, output, ventilation and service room.
