A useful fit for

A compatible office printing routine needing ordinary duplex, passcode release and more included paper than a small single-tray printer.

The main tradeoff

It has no scanner or fax; wireless networking requires an optional adapter, and the guide’s standard body height includes the raised control panel.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a compatible USB computer combine Legal print duplex, the included 700-sheet sources and passcode release?

Yes. The exact B400 configuration includes the 550-sheet tray and 150-sheet bypass, Legal is supported in both and in automatic duplex, and the driver’s Secure Print routine releases jobs by passcode at the panel. Use the stated ordinary-paper conditions.

Can I use AirPrint with the base printer connected to Ethernet?

Yes, on a suitable shared network with supported devices, IPP/Bonjour and the required subnet discovery. This basic route does not promise every desktop duplex, paper or passcode setting in a mobile app.

Does the B400 include the B405’s document feeder and computer scanning?

No. The B400 is print-only. The B405’s glass, feeder, scanning, copying and fax are a different model’s hardware.

A print-only office role with useful included paper capacity

The Xerox VersaLink B400/DN is an earlier monochrome laser printer for a compatible USB or Ethernet office routine. It combines automatic ordinary-paper duplex, a 550-sheet tray, a 150-sheet bypass and a documented passcode-held print workflow. Its main choice is whether those printing functions are sufficient without a scanner or fax.

The B405 in the shared family brochure adds document capture and fax hardware. Those functions do not belong to the B400. Xerox's US page also says the B400 is no longer sold as new, so assess current software, the actual electrical edition and maintenance condition before planning reuse.

Use Secure Print when the job needs a passcode

The computer driver offers several job types with different behavior. Secure Print asks for a passcode, sends the job to the printer and holds it until that passcode is entered at the panel. Open Jobs, then Personal & Secure Jobs, choose the folder and enter the code to release the intended document. The job is deleted after printing.

Personal Print and ordinary Saved Jobs are different. The guide says Personal Print does not use a passcode and has its own Windows network condition; ordinary Saved Jobs are available for reuse unless deleted. A job that waits in a list is therefore not automatically protected in the same way as Secure Print.

Use a compatible Xerox driver and verify the actual options on the intended computer. The separately optional productivity SSD should not be assumed installed, nor treated as a stated prerequisite for this documented basic Secure Print routine.

Match the paper sources to ordinary duplex and special media

The included 550-sheet tray and 150-sheet bypass total 700 ordinary sheets under the maker's configuration rating. Letter, Legal and A4 fit both sources and the automatic duplex path. Plain stock has a stated 60–90 gsm range, while duplex has its own supported types and weight ceiling. Capacity and compatibility should retain those stock conditions.

For ordinary tray loading, place the printable side up and adjust the guides. Preprinted letterhead orientation changes for two-sided work. The Legal extension protrudes when the tray is installed, so its operating depth is greater than the closed body measurement. Confirm the size, type and color settings after changing stock.

Envelopes use the bypass only. Number 10 envelopes load print side up with flaps down and the short edge entering; other listed envelope types have their own instructions. That separate one-sided routine does not make envelopes duplex media. Three additional 550-sheet trays can raise total input to 2,350 sheets, but they are optional.

Mobile printing can use a wired printer

The rear Type B USB port connects a computer directly. Ethernet instead places the printer on a suitable network through a switch or router. Front Type A sockets serve flash-drive or accessory roles and should not be confused with that computer connection.

The base model does not include the optional wireless adapter. Both infrastructure Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct depend on that separate kit. AirPrint or Mopria can still support basic mobile printing while the printer uses Ethernet, provided the mobile device shares the appropriate network and discovery conditions.

AirPrint needs IPP and Bonjour enabled and normally uses the same subnet. A mobile app's paper, duplex and passcode controls remain separate from the desktop driver's options. Confirm those controls when the exact mobile workflow matters.

Separate rated throughput, service items and physical fit

The maker declares up to 47 one-sided Letter pages per minute or 45 on A4, under the brochure's ISO/IEC 24734 reference. The guide gives differing separate duplex figures, so neither becomes a promised 47-page duplex rate. The US page's 15,000-page monthly reference is distinct from the 150,000-page maximum duty ceiling.

Replacement toner declarations range from 5,900 to 24,600 ISO/IEC 19752 average standard pages. The drum, fuser maintenance kit and tray rollers are separate service items. Confirm the appropriate regional supplies and actual voltage label; a replacement-yield figure is not a current cost-per-page estimate.

The guide shows a standard body 18.1 inches wide, 16.8 deep and 18 high with its control panel raised, weighing 29.8 pounds. Allow tray and cover access beyond that outline. Choose a supported MFP when originals must be captured at the same device, or an explicitly wireless configuration when an included printer radio is essential.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker-declared one-sided rate is up to 47 Letter or 45 A4 pages/min, with ISO/IEC 24734 in the US brochure. The guide separately gives 29 and 28 images/min duplex figures on different pages; neither is used as the one-sided rate. The US page’s up-to-15,000 monthly-volume reference is distinct from the brochure’s 150,000-page maximum duty ceiling.

Paper handling

Standard input is a 550-sheet tray plus 150-sheet bypass, totaling 700 ordinary sheets under the maker’s configuration rating; an exact weight basis for that capacity remains unestablished. Both included sources and automatic duplex accept Letter, Legal and A4. Plain paper is 60–90 gsm, with separately listed duplex types through 163 gsm. Three additional 550-sheet trays and 2,350 maximum input are optional. Envelopes use the bypass only; output holds 250 sheets.

Scanning arrangement

B400 is a monochrome print-only model. The B405’s document glass, reversing feeder, copying, scanning and fax are not B400 hardware. A color control panel does not establish color printing or scanning.

Computer and mobile connections

Standard USB Type B computer and gigabit Ethernet connections are documented. Infrastructure Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct require the optional wireless adapter; the base plans omit those routes. Front Type A USB sockets are separate flash-drive/accessory connections. Basic AirPrint/Mopria can use the printer’s Ethernet connection on a suitable shared network.

Supplies and declared yields

US brochure replacement toner declarations are 5,900 standard, 13,900 high and 24,600 extra-high average standard pages to ISO/IEC 19752, with listed numbers 106R03580, 106R03582 and 106R03584. Confirm actual regional compatibility. Drum 101R00554 has its own approximate 65,000-page declaration depending on job/media conditions. The US page lists a separate voltage-specific fuser maintenance kit and tray roller kit. Starter yield remains unknown; no current page cost is asserted.

Software and support

Compatible computer print drivers provide paper, duplex and Secure Print settings. Secure Print holds the job until its passcode is entered through Jobs > Personal & Secure Jobs, then deletes it after printing. Personal Print and ordinary Saved Jobs have different protection. No exact passcode length is asserted. The optional 16 GB productivity SSD is not included or promoted as a prerequisite for the documented basic Secure Print routine. Check current drivers and individual mobile app settings separately.

Electrical edition and setup

Earlier US B400/DN reference; Xerox says it is no longer sold as new. The guide’s standard configuration measures 18.1 in wide, 16.8 in deep and 18 in high at 29.8 lb, with the raised control panel shown. Additional drawers change height and weight. Legal tray extension protrudes, so allow working access. Separate electrical classes are listed; verify the actual unit label rather than assuming universal input.
