VersaLink C400/DNIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible wired color-print routine needing more included ordinary paper capacity and passcode-held jobs.

The main tradeoff

Scanning and fax belong to the separate C405; wireless and the extra 550-sheet drawer are optional hardware.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can USB printing combine Legal color duplex, 700 included sheets and passcode release?

Yes, with a compatible Xerox driver and supported ordinary stock. Both included sources accept Legal, the DN duplex table includes it, and Secure Print holds the computer job for passcode release at the panel.

A print-only configuration with substantial included input

The Xerox VersaLink C400/DN pairs color laser printing with automatic ordinary-paper duplex, a 550-sheet main tray and a 150-sheet bypass. It suits a compatible USB or Ethernet office that needs color documents and passcode-held jobs while handling originals elsewhere.

The DN suffix identifies the automatic-duplex configuration. The earlier N has different sheet-turning hardware, and the C405 adds separate scanning, copying and fax functions. Xerox's US page says C400 is no longer sold as new, so assess the actual unit, current computer software and regional supplies before planning reuse.

Use the ordinary paper capacity under its stated conditions

Included input totals 700 ordinary sheets on the detailed specification's 20 lb/75 gsm basis. Letter, A4 and Legal fit both sources. The optional second 550-sheet drawer can raise total input to 1,250, but that extra capacity is not included in the base DN.

The automatic duplex table explicitly includes Letter, Legal and A4. Keep the size and stock conditions together: the guide lists plain duplex paper at 60–90 gsm, while its ordinary plain category is 75–105 gsm. Plain stock in the 75–90 gsm overlap fits both stated categories. Heavier media have separate type-specific restrictions.

Confirm the size, type and color settings after loading. The main tray can be adjusted for Legal, and its extension needs room beyond the body outline. For ordinary two-sided documents, use the appropriate driver layout setting and check how long-edge or short-edge binding turns the pages.

Envelopes use a separate bypass routine

The C400 instructions direct envelopes to the bypass only. Select Envelope as the media type and use suitable flat paper envelopes without unsupported windows, clasps or padding. They are one-sided media, rather than part of the ordinary automatic-duplex routine.

Number 10 envelopes enter short edge first with flaps down and to the right. Monarch, DL and other listed formats have their own orientation choices. Adjust the guides and confirm the envelope size at the panel when prompted. The bypass's ordinary 150-sheet rating should not be treated as a promise of the same envelope quantity.

Secure Print has a specific release process

Choose Secure Print in a compatible Xerox computer driver, enter and confirm a passcode, then send the job. At the touchscreen, open Jobs and Personal & Secure Jobs, select the folder and enter that code. Choose the intended job to print; the secure job is deleted after printing.

Personal Print does not use a passcode, and ordinary Saved Jobs have different access. A document waiting at the printer is therefore not necessarily protected in the same way. Verify that the required job-type controls are available on the intended computer.

The optional productivity hard drive expands storage and other listed functions. It should not be assumed installed, nor treated as a stated prerequisite for the documented basic Secure Print routine.

A wired printer can still serve mobile devices

The rear USB Type B socket connects a computer directly. Ethernet connects through a suitable router or switch and provides access to the printer's web settings. Type A sockets serve separate flash-drive or accessory roles.

Infrastructure Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct require the optional wireless adapter. Basic AirPrint or Mopria can still work on a suitable shared network while the printer uses Ethernet. AirPrint needs IPP and Bonjour enabled and the appropriate subnet discovery. Check each mobile app's paper, duplex and protected-job controls separately.

No connection arrangement adds a scanner to C400. Choose a supported MFP when copying or computer capture of originals is essential.

Keep throughput, maintenance and physical fit separate

The detailed sheet declares up to 36 one-sided Letter, 35 A4 or 30 Legal pages per minute in color or monochrome under ISO/IEC 24734. Its 8,500-page recommended monthly reference is distinct from the 85,000-page maximum duty ceiling.

Included toner is declared at 3,000 black and 2,000 pages per color under ISO/IEC 19798. Replacement capacities differ, and the imaging-unit kit and waste cartridge are separate service items. Match their regional identities to the actual machine.

The detailed body specification is 19.3 inches wide, 19.2 deep and 15.7 high at about 57 pounds. The guide's own drawing agrees with that height, although its table gives a conflicting 21 inches. Allow generous panel, cover, output and tray access, and measure the installed unit when a tight shelf determines fit.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

The detailed sheet declares up to 36 one-sided Letter, 35 A4 and 30 Legal pages/min in color or monochrome, under ISO/IEC 24734. Its separate two-sided declarations are not the Letter simplex figure. Recommended regular monthly volume is up to 8,500, also reflected by the US page, distinct from 85,000 maximum duty.

Paper handling

Included ordinary input is 550 sheets in Tray 1 plus 150 in the bypass, totaling 700 on 20 lb / 75 gsm stock. Both accept Letter, Legal and A4, and the DN automatic duplex table explicitly includes those sizes. The guide separately lists plain duplex stock at 60–90 gsm, ordinary plain at 75–105 gsm, and specified lightweight duplex card through 163 gsm; 75–90 gsm plain fits both lists. Envelopes use the bypass only as a one-sided routine. The optional 550-sheet drawer and 1,250 maximum input are additional hardware.

Scanning arrangement

C400 is a color print-only laser printer. It has no document glass, feeder, copying, computer scanning or native fax. The C405 in the same family table contains separate capture and fax hardware; a color touchscreen does not add those functions to C400.

Computer and mobile connections

Standard connections are rear USB Type B computer and gigabit Ethernet. Infrastructure Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct require the optional wireless adapter. Front Type A sockets serve separate flash-drive/accessory purposes. Basic AirPrint or Mopria can use the Ethernet-connected printer on a suitable shared network, with app controls checked separately.

Supplies and declared yields

The detailed sheet declares included black toner at 3,000 and each color at 2,000 average standard pages under ISO/IEC 19798. Replacement declarations are 2,500 standard per color, high black 5,000 / CMY 4,800, and extra-high black 10,500 / CMY 8,000. Actual US page numbers include black 106R03500, 106R03512 and 106R03524, with their corresponding regional color cartridges; verify compatibility before ordering. Imaging-unit kit 108R01121 and waste cartridge 108R01124 have separate approximate 60,000 and 30,000 declarations affected by job and media conditions. No current page cost is asserted.

Software and support

A compatible computer driver offers Secure Print with a user-entered passcode. At the panel, choose Jobs > Personal & Secure Jobs, select the folder and enter the code; secure jobs are deleted after printing. Personal Print has no passcode and ordinary Saved Jobs have different access. No exact print-passcode length is established. The optional 320 GB productivity HDD expands storage and other listed functions; it is not described as necessary for this basic Secure Print routine. Verify current software for the intended computer.

Electrical edition and setup

Earlier US configuration reference; Xerox says C400 is no longer sold as new. The detailed sheet lists an unpackaged body 19.3 in wide, 19.2 deep and 15.7 high at 57 lb. The guide’s table gives a conflicting 21 in height, while its own drawing and the detailed sheet agree at 15.7 in; its weight is 56.9 lb. Allow panel, cover, output and extended-tray access beyond the body outline; an added drawer changes height. Separate North American 110–127 V and other 220–240 V electrical editions are documented; verify the actual unit label.
