Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can an Ethernet computer print Legal color documents with 700 included sheets and passcode release?
Yes, with the compatible driver and stated ordinary-paper conditions. The main tray and bypass accept Legal, and Secure Print provides computer-to-panel passcode release. This base N routine does not include automatic duplex.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the N automatically turn Letter sheets for two-sided printing?
No. The exact variant table marks automatic two-sided printing unavailable for N and standard for DN. The shared family’s duplex media list does not add that hardware to N.
Explore this need in the finder →Can a wired N support basic AirPrint on my shared network?
Yes, with a suitable shared network, supported devices, IPP and Bonjour enabled and the required subnet discovery. Confirm individual app controls separately.

The Xerox VersaLink C400/N is an earlier color laser printer with USB and Ethernet, substantial included ordinary input and a documented passcode-held print routine. It can suit a compatible office that makes color documents without needing automatic sheet turning at the printer.
The N configuration does not include automatic duplex. The exact family table marks that function unavailable for N and standard for DN. The C405 also has separate document-capture hardware. Xerox says the C400 family is no longer sold as new, so confirm the actual unit's configuration, electrical label, condition and current drivers before planning reuse.
Start with the included 700 ordinary sheets
The main tray holds 550 sheets and the bypass 150, totaling 700 on the detailed sheet's 20 lb/75 gsm basis. Both accept ordinary Letter, A4 and Legal. Capacity varies with stock weight, and the maximum fill line remains the loading limit.
The guide lists ordinary plain stock at 75–105 gsm, with separate categories for card and other media. Adjust the tray and guides for the sheet size, then confirm the printer and driver settings. Legal requires the appropriate tray extension and additional front access.
An optional second 550-sheet drawer can raise total ordinary input to 1,250. That maximum is useful only if the actual drawer is installed. A photograph or family maximum should not replace an inventory of the machine being considered.
If automatic two-sided work is essential, select a configuration that explicitly contains the duplex hardware. A shared driver description or family paper table does not give the N that function. Any manually turned job needs a separate, deliberate refeeding routine.
Keep special media on their own path
The C400 manual directs envelopes to the bypass only. Select Envelope as the media type and follow the format-specific loading instructions. For Number 10, the short edge enters first with flaps down and to the right.
Other supported envelope formats have different orientation choices. Use suitable flat paper envelopes and avoid unsupported windows, clasps or padding. The bypass's ordinary 150-sheet rating is not an envelope capacity statement. Confirm size and type at the touchscreen when prompted.
Use the protected job type when local release matters
Secure Print lets a compatible computer driver assign a passcode before sending the document. At the printer, open Jobs, then Personal & Secure Jobs, select the relevant folder and enter the code. Choose the job to print or delete. A secure job is deleted after printing.
Personal Print explicitly does not use a passcode, while ordinary Saved Jobs have different access. Choose the protected job type deliberately rather than assuming that any waiting document is private. Verify the driver's controls on the intended operating system.
The optional productivity hard drive provides additional storage and other listed functions. It should not be assumed installed or described as necessary for this documented basic release routine.
Ethernet provides a shared-network option
A rear USB Type B cable connects a computer directly. Ethernet instead connects through an appropriate router or switch, enabling shared printing and the embedded web settings. Type A sockets serve separate flash-drive and accessory roles.
The wireless adapter is optional. AirPrint or Mopria can still provide basic printing through a suitable shared network with the printer using Ethernet. AirPrint needs IPP and Bonjour enabled and appropriate subnet discovery. Individual mobile apps may expose different paper and job controls from the desktop driver.
The C400/N has no scanner, document feeder, copying or native fax. A color touchscreen and a general app catalog do not supply that hardware. Choose an MFP when originals must be captured at the same device.
Check service items and operating space
The detailed specification declares up to 36 one-sided Letter, 35 A4 or 30 Legal pages per minute under ISO/IEC 24734. The recommended monthly reference is up to 8,500 pages; the 85,000-page maximum duty ceiling serves a different purpose.
Included toner declarations are 3,000 black and 2,000 pages per color under ISO/IEC 19798. Replacement yields differ. The imaging-unit kit and waste cartridge are additional maintenance items, and regional cartridge identities need checking.
The detailed sheet and manual drawing give a body about 19.3 inches wide, 19.2 deep and 15.7 high at roughly 57 pounds. A conflicting 21-inch height appears in the manual table. Allow panel, cover, output and extended-tray access beyond the body figure, and measure the installed unit before relying on a tight shelf.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
The detailed sheet declares up to 36 one-sided Letter, 35 A4 and 30 Legal pages/min in color or monochrome, under ISO/IEC 24734. Its separate two-sided declarations are not the Letter simplex figure. Recommended regular monthly volume is up to 8,500, also reflected by the US page, distinct from 85,000 maximum duty.
Paper handling
The N configuration lacks automatic print duplex. Included ordinary input is 550 sheets in Tray 1 plus 150 in the bypass, totaling 700 on 20 lb / 75 gsm stock. Both accept Letter, Legal and A4. The optional 550-sheet drawer raises maximum input to 1,250 only when installed. Envelopes use the bypass as a separate one-sided routine; ordinary plain stock is listed at 75–105 gsm. Family automatic-duplex media tables belong to the separate duplex configuration.
Scanning arrangement
C400 is a color print-only laser printer. It has no document glass, feeder, copying, computer scanning or native fax. The C405 in the same family table contains separate capture and fax hardware; a color touchscreen does not add those functions to C400.
Computer and mobile connections
Standard connections are rear USB Type B computer and gigabit Ethernet. Infrastructure Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct require the optional wireless adapter. Front Type A sockets serve separate flash-drive/accessory purposes. Basic AirPrint or Mopria can use the Ethernet-connected printer on a suitable shared network, with app controls checked separately.
Supplies and declared yields
The detailed sheet declares included black toner at 3,000 and each color at 2,000 average standard pages under ISO/IEC 19798. Replacement declarations are 2,500 standard per color, high black 5,000 / CMY 4,800, and extra-high black 10,500 / CMY 8,000. Actual US page numbers include black 106R03500, 106R03512 and 106R03524, with their corresponding regional color cartridges; verify compatibility before ordering. Imaging-unit kit 108R01121 and waste cartridge 108R01124 have separate approximate 60,000 and 30,000 declarations affected by job and media conditions. No current page cost is asserted.
Software and support
A compatible computer driver offers Secure Print with a user-entered passcode. At the panel, choose Jobs > Personal & Secure Jobs, select the folder and enter the code; secure jobs are deleted after printing. Personal Print has no passcode and ordinary Saved Jobs have different access. No exact print-passcode length is established. The optional 320 GB productivity HDD expands storage and other listed functions; it is not described as necessary for this basic Secure Print routine. Verify current software for the intended computer.
Electrical edition and setup
Earlier US configuration reference; Xerox says C400 is no longer sold as new. The detailed sheet lists an unpackaged body 19.3 in wide, 19.2 deep and 15.7 high at 57 lb. The guide’s table gives a conflicting 21 in height, while its own drawing and the detailed sheet agree at 15.7 in; its weight is 56.9 lb. Allow panel, cover, output and extended-tray access beyond the body outline; an added drawer changes height. Separate North American 110–127 V and other 220–240 V electrical editions are documented; verify the actual unit label.
