Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can Ethernet support Legal single-pass color scanning, Legal print duplex, 700 included sheets and passcode release?
Yes, with the compatible computer software and configured network scan destination. The 50-sheet DADF reads both sides of Legal originals in one pass, both included paper sources support ordinary Legal, and Secure Print holds jobs for passcode release. Fax additionally requires its active configured analog line.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I scan a fragile Legal original on the glass?
The scanner-specific manual and US detailed tables limit the glass to 8.5 by 11.7 inches. Legal is supported through the feeder. Choose explicitly documented Legal glass if the original cannot travel through a feeder.
Explore this need in the finder →Is Wi-Fi computer scanning included in the base DN?
No. Standard connections are USB and Ethernet. The wireless adapter is optional, so a base DN cannot be assumed to provide that wireless computer arrangement.

The Xerox VersaLink C405/DN combines color laser printing, ordinary automatic duplex and a 50-sheet single-pass document feeder. It suits a compatible USB or Ethernet office that needs computer scanning, copying and separately configured analog fax, alongside passcode-held print jobs.
Its scanner is a substantial difference from the print-only C400. The DN also includes automatic print duplex, whereas the N in the exact variant table has different sheet-turning hardware. Wireless and the extra paper drawer remain options. Xerox's US page says C405 is no longer sold as new, so verify the actual unit, drivers and electrical edition before planning reuse.
Match the original to the glass or feeder
The feeder scans both sides automatically in one pass and accepts Letter, A4 and Legal originals. Its range extends from 5.5 inches square to 8.5 by 14 inches, with a stated 60–125 gsm range for two-sided originals. The 50-sheet capacity is based on 75 gsm paper.
Load loose, undamaged sheets face up with the top edge entering first, and adjust the guides. Use the glass for suitable books or originals that should not pass through the feeder. The scanner-specific tables limit that surface to 8.5 by 11.7 inches, covering Letter and A4. Legal feeder support does not enlarge the glass.
Color capture is documented at up to 600 by 600 optical dpi and 24-bit color. An interpolated 1,200-dpi TWAIN setting is a different figure. Choose the required sides, output color and file settings in the actual scanning routine.
Configure computer capture for the chosen connection
USB computer scanning needs an A-to-B cable, a suitable application and TWAIN/WIA drivers for Windows or ICA for Mac. Select the printer as the scanning device, then choose Flatbed or Document Feeder. A front USB flash-drive routine is separate from that computer cable connection.
For Ethernet, configure the network and the intended computer destination. WSD scanning needs the device installed and discoverable through WSD. Shared-folder capture needs a valid folder, address-book destination and appropriate credentials. These are setup tasks, rather than features created simply by attaching a network cable.
Infrastructure Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct require the optional wireless adapter. Basic AirPrint and Mopria can still serve suitable mobile devices on a shared network with the printer using Ethernet. Check the app's available controls separately from desktop scanning and protected-print settings.
Separate ordinary duplex from special media
The included 550-sheet main tray and 150-sheet bypass total 700 ordinary sheets on 20 lb/75 gsm stock. Letter, A4 and Legal fit both sources and the DN's automatic duplex path. Confirm paper size and type at the panel and in the driver after loading.
Plain stock has a stated 75–105 gsm range. Heavier media have separate restrictions, so do not treat one-sided heavy-paper compatibility as a general duplex promise. Envelopes use the bypass only, one-sided, with Envelope selected as the type. Number 10 envelopes enter short edge first with flaps down and to the right.
The optional 550-sheet drawer raises maximum input to 1,250 only when installed. The standard configuration's capacity remains 700. Leave room for the Legal tray extension and routine loading access.
Use the protected job type and a separate fax line
Secure Print begins in a compatible computer driver with an entered and confirmed passcode. At the panel, open Jobs and Personal & Secure Jobs, select the folder and enter the code. The secure job is deleted after printing. Personal Print does not use a passcode, so a waiting document is not automatically protected.
Embedded fax uses an active analog telephone line at LINE, with fax enabled and configured. A digital phone connection or generic server-fax service is a different arrangement. Check the installed hardware and setup on a reused machine. The optional productivity hard drive and software services have their own conditions.
Plan workload, supplies and access together
The US detailed sheet declares up to 36 one-sided Letter, 35 A4 or 30 Legal pages per minute under ISO/IEC 24734. Scan images, copies and duplex print figures are separate. Its 8,500-page recommended monthly reference differs from the 85,000-page maximum duty ceiling.
Included toner declarations are 3,000 black and 2,000 pages per color under ISO/IEC 19798. Replacement capacities differ, while the imaging-unit kit and waste cartridge are separate service items. Confirm regional supply compatibility.
The standard body is approximately 17 inches wide, 21.3 deep and 23.6 high at 72 pounds. Allow additional glass, feeder, cover and output access. Choose a larger scanner glass or an explicitly wireless configuration when either requirement decides the purchase.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
US detailed specifications declare up to 36 one-sided Letter, 35 A4 or 30 Legal pages/min in color or monochrome under ISO/IEC 24734. Separate duplex, scan-image and copy figures are not the Letter simplex rate. Recommended average monthly throughput is up to 8,500, with no minimum implied, distinct from 85,000 maximum duty.
Paper handling
Standard ordinary input is 550 sheets in Tray 1 plus 150 in the bypass, totaling 700 on 20 lb / 75 gsm stock. Both accept Letter, Legal and A4, and the DN automatic print duplex table includes those sizes. Plain stock is 75–105 gsm; heavier media have separate restrictions and conflicting upper rows, so do not generalize one-sided 220 gsm support to duplex. An optional 550-sheet drawer raises maximum input to 1,250. Envelopes use the bypass only, one-sided, with format-specific orientation.
Scanning arrangement
The 50-sheet single-pass DADF automatically reads both sides of Letter, Legal and A4 originals within its 5.5 x 5.5 to 8.5 x 14 in. range; 75 gsm is the capacity basis and 60–125 gsm the detailed duplex-original range. The scanner-specific tables support Letter/A4 glass at a maximum 8.5 x 11.7 in. A generic manual paragraph gives an inconsistent larger glass size and is not used over the repeated scanner tables. Color scanning is up to 600 x 600 optical dpi and 24-bit color; 1,200 interpolated TWAIN resolution is a separate figure. USB computer and configured Ethernet computer capture routes are documented.
Computer and mobile connections
Base DN includes rear USB Type B and gigabit Ethernet. Infrastructure Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct require the optional wireless adapter. USB computer capture needs suitable TWAIN/WIA or ICA drivers and an application. Ethernet supports configured WSD or shared computer destinations. Basic AirPrint/Mopria can use the printer’s Ethernet connection on a suitable shared network. Front USB memory is a separate routine.
Supplies and declared yields
US box-list toner declarations are black 3,000 and each color 2,000 average standard pages under ISO/IEC 19798. Replacement declarations are 2,500 standard per color, high black 5,000 / CMY 4,800, and extra-high black 10,500 / CMY 8,000. US black numbers are 106R03500, 106R03512 and 106R03524, with the corresponding regional color cartridges; confirm compatibility. Imaging-unit kit 108R01121 and waste cartridge 108R01124 have separate approximate 60,000 and 30,000-page declarations affected by job, media and speed conditions. No current cost per page is asserted.
Software and support
A compatible computer print driver offers Secure Print with a passcode; release through Jobs > Personal & Secure Jobs at the panel, with secure jobs deleted after printing. Personal Print does not use a passcode. The optional 320 GB HDD and app/service upgrades have their own conditions and are not a stated prerequisite for this basic routine. Confirm current drivers and the intended scan application. Native fax separately needs an active analog line at LINE with fax enabled and configured; digital telephone or generic server-fax software is not an equivalent included path.
Electrical edition and setup
Earlier US DN reference; Xerox says C405 is no longer sold as new. The standard body is 17 in wide, 21.3 deep and 23.6 high at approximately 72 lb, without the optional drawer. Allow glass/feeder, cover, output and extended-tray access beyond those dimensions. Separate North American 110–127 V and other 220–240 V editions are documented; verify the actual unit label and installed fax/option configuration.
