Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can a USB-connected C500/DN produce color Legal duplex documents, hold them for PIN release and use 700 included sheets?
Yes in the documented compatible desktop driver. DN includes automatic duplex, and Legal is explicitly supported for two-sided output and both included input paths. Secure Print holds the computer job until its passcode is entered at the panel. The ordinary-sheet capacity is based on 75 gsm stock.
Explore this need in the finder →Can an Ethernet-connected C500/DN print through AirPrint and Mopria without buying a Wi-Fi adapter?
Yes on a suitable shared office network with compatible clients and discovery enabled. The printer can use Ethernet while the mobile device reaches that network wirelessly. This basic route does not automatically inherit the desktop driver’s passcode and exact media options.
Explore this need in the finder →Can its color screen or cloud apps provide the single-pass Legal scanning and copying needed for incoming contracts?
No. C500 is print-only. The C505 family scanner and feeder do not belong to the C500/DN, and a USB memory-printing socket does not capture a paper original. Compare a separately confirmed multifunction model for that workflow.

The Xerox VersaLink C500/DN suits a workgroup that already has a way to scan originals and wants color computer output with automatic two-sided printing. Its included Ethernet connection serves an office network, while USB can serve a single compatible computer.
The DN suffix is significant: the exact configuration table gives DN standard automatic duplex and marks it unavailable on N. C500 is also print-only. The related C505's document glass, feeder, copying and fax functions should not be assumed from a shared brochure or the C500's color touchscreen.
Xerox's US shop marks C500 discontinued. This earlier reference covers the documented US electrical edition and LED toner engine. It makes no claim about a particular unit's condition, stock or measured output quality.
Start with the paper that must stay loaded
The base includes a 550-sheet main drawer and 150-sheet bypass, totaling 700 ordinary sheets at 75 gsm. Both support Letter, Legal and A4. The guide independently confirms those sizes for automatic duplex, so a Legal print requirement can be considered together with its two-sided routine.
The bypass can serve occasional supported media while the main drawer holds the regular stock. Envelopes need their own feed direction, size and type settings. They do not borrow the ordinary-sheet count or the plain-paper duplex permission.
For Number 10 envelopes in the bypass, Xerox describes short-edge feeding with the flaps down and to the right. Use suitable flat paper envelopes and the instructed stack limit. A windowed, padded or metal-clasped envelope is not interchangeable with the supported stock.
Optional capacity is a separate decision. The 2,000-sheet feeder accepts Letter/A4 and therefore does not add that quantity of Legal storage. Extra drawers, a cabinet and casters also change the machine's height and required access. Count the equipment actually installed, then check which paper sizes each path holds.
Make passcode release part of the document routine
Secure Print can hold a compatible computer job until the user enters its passcode at the panel. That release step is useful for paperwork that should not wait in a shared tray while its sender is elsewhere.
Choose Secure Print in the driver, create and confirm the passcode, and release the submitted job from the panel's personal and secure jobs area. Personal Print has a different access model and does not use the same passcode protection.
The optional Productivity Kit should be considered separately. Disk overwrite explicitly depends on that equipment. Original document versions describe different drive capacities, so confirm the installed kit before planning storage-dependent functions. The included passcode-print routine is not a reason to assume every optional security accessory is present.
Use the actual network path for mobile printing
Native AirPrint and Mopria provide a basic shared-network printing route. A mobile client can reach an Ethernet-connected printer through a suitable office network; the printer does not need its own Wi-Fi radio solely because the phone is wireless.
Discovery and configuration still matter. AirPrint requires the appropriate protocols and network reachability, and the application must support the requested operation. Keep basic mobile printing separate from the compatible desktop driver's exact media and passcode controls.
Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct require the optional adapter. NFC pairing is not a replacement for the missing radio. Likewise, an old cloud-service or operating-system list should prompt a software compatibility check before it becomes part of a present installation.
Use workload and supply declarations for planning
The May 2022 US detailed table declares up to 45 one-sided Letter pages per minute in color or monochrome, with separate A4, Legal and duplex figures. Its recommended average monthly output is up to 10,000 pages. The 120,000-page maximum duty figure is a different declaration and should not become the normal monthly target.
US toner ordering codes differ from some regional tables. Four toner colors, separate drums and a waste cartridge also mean a toner yield alone does not describe every maintenance item. Check the actual market and installed supplies, particularly for an earlier machine with unknown remaining life.
The detailed sheet lists the unpackaged base at 16.9 by 18.4 by 17.5 inches and 61 lb. Allow more room for open trays, output and service. If incoming originals need scanning or copying, compare a confirmed multifunction model; if computer output is the main task, the C500/DN's relevant combination is standard duplex, documented paper handling and deliberate job release.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
The May 2022 US detailed table declares up to 45 one-sided Letter pages/min in color or monochrome, 43 A4 and 37 Legal under ISO/IEC 24734. Automatic-duplex output is separately 44 Letter, 42 A4 and 22 Legal. The November 2022 guide gives 43/41 Letter/A4 duplex; the detailed-table basis is retained. Recommended average monthly output is up to 10,000, distinct from the 120,000 maximum duty. Older 8,000 monthly material does not override the dated 2022 original. These are maker declarations, not measured speed or quality results.
Paper handling
The included 550-sheet main tray and 150-sheet bypass total 700 ordinary sheets at 20 lb, 75 gsm. Letter, Legal and A4 fit both paths and are individually confirmed for DN automatic duplex. Supported types and weights still apply; envelopes and labels do not borrow ordinary-paper capacity or duplex permission. The optional 2,000-sheet feeder accepts Letter/A4, so it adds no Legal storage. Extra 550-sheet drawers, cabinet and caster base are separate purchases with installation limits. The guide permits envelopes from Tray 1 or bypass. For Number 10 envelopes in the bypass use short-edge feed, flaps down and to the right; select Envelope and the exact size in the compatible driver. Keep the stack below 16.5 mm, approximately 10–20 depending on construction. Avoid padded, windowed, metal-clasped, heat-activated and press-and-seal envelopes. Monarch/DL have a separately described alternative orientation.
Scanning arrangement
C500 is a print-only color LED model. The family table assigns the physical glass, single-pass feeder, copying and fax to C505, with scanning and fax not applicable to C500. A color screen, cloud-print connector or front USB memory socket does not add original-document capture.
Computer and mobile connections
Included Gigabit Ethernet and rear USB 3 Type B support computer printing with compatible drivers. Front Type A is for supported memory-drive files. Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct require the optional 497K16750 adapter; NFC pairing does not supply it. Native AirPrint and Mopria can reach the Ethernet printer on a suitable shared network, with compatible clients and discovery protocols enabled. AirPrint requires IPP and Bonjour/mDNS plus same-subnet access or suitable discovery routing. Mobile printing is recorded separately from desktop size, duplex and passcode controls. Historical cloud names and OS lists do not guarantee current app, driver or service availability.
Supplies and declared yields
The US box table declares supplied black toner at 5,000 pages and cyan, magenta and yellow at 2,400 each under ISO/IEC 19798. US standard replacements are 106R03862 black and 106R03859/60/61 colors. High-capacity 106R03869 black declares 12,100 and 106R03863/64/65 colors 5,200 each; extra-high colors 106R03866/67/68 declare 9,000 each. Regional evaluator high-capacity codes differ. Separate drums 108R01481/82/83/84 each have an approximate 40,000-page declaration and waste cartridge 108R01416 approximately 30,000. Coverage, print mode, job length and media basis matter; these declarations are not remaining toner or a live running-cost calculation.
Software and support
Secure Print is included for compatible computer jobs and holds the job until its passcode is entered at the panel. In the driver select Printing Options, Job Type, Secure Print, then type and confirm the code. At Home choose Jobs, Personal & Secure Jobs, your folder and the passcode, then release the job. Printed secure jobs are deleted automatically. Personal Print does not use a passcode. The Productivity Kit is optional; immediate disk overwrite specifically requires its storage. The US detailed sheet lists 320 GB while the guide calls the optional kit 250 GB. Confirm installed equipment rather than assuming either capacity or every storage-dependent function is included.
Electrical edition and setup
The reviewed US electrical edition uses the separately stated North American 110–127 VAC supply; Europe/other 220–240 VAC is another edition. Check the exact rating label. The US maker shop marks C500 discontinued. US detailed-table unpackaged base is 16.9 x 18.4 x 17.5 inches and 61 lb, not the 75 lb carton. The guide uses 16.8 x 18.3 x 17.3/60.8 and also prints 17.5 for the same 443.4 mm height; the larger detailed-table inch basis is retained. Allow additional working clearance for trays, output, cables and service.
