An office digitizing double-sided forms and printing color Letter or Legal paperwork through USB or Ethernet.

The main tradeoff

The exact S configuration omits the X model’s included analog fax, and its Productivity Kit and wireless adapter are optional.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a compatible USB computer use the C505/S to scan both sides of Legal forms in one pass and make copies?

Yes. The included 100-sheet single-pass duplex feeder and Legal glass are confirmed separately. The guide explicitly supports USB computer scanning with an A/B cable, a suitable application and TWAIN/WIA or ICA drivers. This USB workflow does not require an Ethernet scan destination.

Will a base C505/S satisfy a wired office that also needs conventional fax as an included daily function?

No. The exact variant table marks S fax not applicable and X fax standard. A generic family fax feature list or fax cord in a combined box list does not establish the S hardware and activated analog path. Compare a separately confirmed fax configuration and its telephone requirements.

Can the included 700-sheet setup handle color Legal duplex output and PIN-held computer jobs for a 9,000-page month?

Yes through the documented compatible Ethernet desktop driver. Both included input paths support Legal, and the guide explicitly confirms Legal duplex. Secure Print is included; optional disk-dependent functions are separate. The 10,000-page recommended monthly maximum covers 9,000, and the 45-ppm figure is specifically one-sided Letter output.

A capture-focused configuration for a wired office

The Xerox VersaLink C505/S is useful when color printing and original-document capture share one office machine, but conventional fax is not an included requirement. Its 100-sheet single-pass duplex feeder and Legal-size glass make the document-handling distinction more important than the presence of a large color touchscreen.

The exact S suffix matters. Xerox's configuration tables separate its optional Productivity Kit from the X model's included kit, and identify fax as not applicable to the base S arrangement. Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct also require an optional adapter. USB and Ethernet are the included computer connections.

The manufacturer marks C505 discontinued in its US shop. This earlier-model assessment describes the supported US electrical edition and toner-based LED engine, without claiming current stock or measured performance.

Choose a scan destination before loading the originals

For one computer, a USB scan routine is explicitly documented. Connect the rear computer port with an A/B cable, install compatible scan drivers and use a supported application. Windows TWAIN/WIA and Macintosh ICA are named in the guide; an old operating-system list does not guarantee a current installation without checking its available software.

An office network offers a different routine. The printer can deliver scans to a shared SMB folder once the destination, address and appropriate access credentials are configured. That makes the destination part of setup, rather than a task users must improvise after scanning a stack.

The feeder handles suitable loose pages and scans both document sides in one pass. Its confirmed size range includes Letter, Legal and A4. The glass also accepts Legal independently, so a long individual original does not have to enter the feeder merely because of its length.

Use the glass for books or originals unsuitable for feeding. Neither the 100-sheet rating nor automatic two-sided capture authorizes stapled, damaged or incompatible stock. A saved scan preset can simplify recurring forms, but checking orientation, file type and the final destination remains worthwhile.

Keep the paper arrangement tied to the documents

The base includes a 550-sheet main tray and 150-sheet bypass, totaling 700 ordinary sheets at 75 gsm. Both accept Letter, Legal and A4, and all three sizes are explicitly supported for automatic print duplex. That is separate from the scanner's single-pass mechanism.

A regular drawer stock can coexist with occasional supported bypass media. Envelopes require their own instructed orientation and driver settings. For Number 10 envelopes, the guide describes short-edge feeding with flaps down and to the right. Do not treat the ordinary-sheet rating as an envelope count or apply automatic duplex to the envelope routine.

Extra drawers and the 2,000-sheet feeder are optional. The high-capacity feeder accepts Letter/A4, so its capacity does not increase the amount of Legal paper that can remain loaded. Check which sizes the installed arrangement holds before relying on a maximum-input headline.

Release confidential work deliberately

Included Secure Print holds a compatible computer job until its passcode is entered at the machine. A user can submit the job, walk to the panel and release it there. Personal Print stores jobs differently and does not provide the same passcode requirement.

Storage-dependent features need more care on S. The exact variant table makes the Productivity Kit optional, while other family tables describe different memory and drive arrangements. Confirm the installed kit before relying on immediate disk overwrite or particular advanced copy features.

AirPrint and Mopria provide a separate basic mobile-printing route on a suitable shared network. A printer using Ethernet can be reached by compatible mobile devices through the office network; that does not mean its optional Wi-Fi adapter is installed. Discovery and the application's actual controls determine the usable mobile arrangement.

Judge workload and physical fit on the stated basis

The US detailed table declares 45 one-sided Letter pages per minute in color or monochrome, with separate A4, Legal and duplex figures. Its recommended average monthly ceiling is 10,000 pages; the 120,000-page duty maximum should not become a routine production target.

Four toner colors, separate drums and a waste cartridge make regional replacement identity worth checking. US high-capacity codes differ from those in the inherited regional table, and declared yields depend on document coverage and operating conditions.

The unpackaged base is listed at 18.5 by 19.9 by 25.3 inches and 77.2 lb. Leave additional space for glass access, open trays and maintenance. If analog fax is essential, compare the exact C505/X and its dedicated telephone setup; if scanning is unnecessary, a separately confirmed print-only unit is the more relevant alternative.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

The May 2022 US detailed table declares up to 45 one-sided Letter pages/min in color or monochrome, 43 A4 and 37 Legal under ISO/IEC 24734. Automatic-duplex figures are separately 44 Letter, 42 A4 and 22 Legal. The November 2022 guide gives 43/41 Letter/A4 duplex; this assessment uses the detailed-table basis. The recommended average monthly maximum is 10,000, distinct from the 120,000 duty maximum. Scanner image rates are separate from printing, and none is a measured timing or quality result.

Paper handling

The included 550-sheet main tray and 150-sheet bypass total 700 ordinary sheets at 20 lb, 75 gsm. Both support Letter, Legal and A4, and the guide separately confirms those exact automatic-duplex sizes. The optional 2,000-sheet feeder accepts Letter/A4 and adds no Legal storage. Extra drawers, cabinet and caster base are separate equipment. Media types and weights have their own restrictions; the ordinary-paper rating does not describe envelopes. The guide permits envelopes from Tray 1 or bypass. For Number 10 in the bypass use short-edge feed, flaps down and to the right, select Envelope and the exact size in the compatible driver, and keep the stack below 16.5 mm. The approximate 10–20-envelope count depends on construction. Do not use padded, windowed, clasped, heat-activated or press-and-seal envelopes, and do not assign them automatic duplex.

Scanning arrangement

The C505 has a Legal-size document glass and a standard 100-sheet single-pass duplex document feeder. Letter, Legal and A4 fit the positively documented glass and feeder ranges. The feeder accepts loose undamaged originals 140–216 mm wide and 140–356 mm long. The guide gives 60–125 gsm while the detailed table gives 60–128 gsm; follow the actual instructions and stock. Books, wrinkled or delicate originals use the glass. US detailed specifications give 600 x 600 dpi optical scanning; the shared guide gives 600 x 400, so neither is treated as an interpolated or tested quality claim. USB computer scanning explicitly requires an A/B cable, compatible application and TWAIN/WIA for Windows or ICA for Macintosh. Ethernet scanning can deliver to an SMB shared folder with appropriate access and destination credentials; network WSD is another described routine. Front USB flash-drive scanning is separate from the rear computer connection. The exact C505/S table marks fax not applicable in the included configuration. The family specification lists fax functions and a generic box fax cord, but these do not establish a base S analog path. Server-fax or later accessory arrangements need their own exact activation and connection evidence.

Computer and mobile connections

USB 3 Type B computer printing and Gigabit Ethernet are included. Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct require the optional 497K16750 adapter; NFC pairing does not supply a radio. The compatible desktop print/scan driver arrangements below retain paper and scan functions together. Native AirPrint and Mopria use a suitable shared network and are recorded separately from desktop driver controls. AirPrint requires IPP and Bonjour/mDNS, with the client on the same subnet or suitable discovery routing. A phone can use the office network while the printer uses Ethernet. Historical app/cloud-service names do not establish current service availability, licenses or optional accessories.

Supplies and declared yields

The US table lists supplied cartridges at 5,000 black and 2,400 each cyan, magenta and yellow pages under ISO/IEC 19798; an earlier unit may no longer contain fresh supplied toner. US standard replacement black is 106R03862, and cyan/magenta/yellow are 106R03859/60/61. US high-capacity black 106R03869 declares 12,100 pages and colors 106R03863/64/65 declare 5,200 each; extra-high colors 106R03866/67/68 declare 9,000 each. The regional inherited table instead uses 03870–76 ordering codes. Match the actual market and machine. Separate drums 108R01481/82/83/84 each have an approximate 40,000-page declaration, and waste cartridge 108R01416 approximately 30,000; these are not toner yields. Coverage, mode, job length and media conditions matter. No cost-per-page or remaining-life claim.

Software and support

Included Secure Print holds a compatible computer print job until its passcode is entered at the panel. In the driver choose Job Type, Secure Print, type and confirm the code, then submit. At Home choose Jobs, Personal & Secure Jobs, your folder and passcode, then release the desired job. Printed secure jobs are automatically deleted. Personal Print and Saved Jobs have different access behavior; Personal Print does not use a passcode. Immediate disk overwrite and certain advanced copy features require the HDD/Productivity Kit. Check current compatible drivers and the installed storage configuration rather than assuming every family app or historical operating-system listing applies. The exact S variant lists the Productivity Kit as optional. The evaluator calls the option 320 GB and the guide 250 GB, while the generic C505 specification heading lists 320 GB without a suffix. This assessment retains the exact S optional condition and does not count disk overwrite or storage-dependent copy enhancements as base equipment.

Electrical edition and setup

This reference describes the US electrical edition, listed as 110–127 VAC separately from Europe/other 220–240 VAC. Confirm the rating label and exact suffix on the actual unit. The US maker shop marks C505 discontinued. The detailed-table unpackaged body is 18.5 x 19.9 x 25.3 inches and 77.2 lb; the 94.8 lb carton and added feeder/cabinet arrangements are different. Allow room above for the glass/feeder and around open trays, cables, output and service access.
