The main tradeoff

USB is print-only, and the standard main drawer does not take Legal paper; extra drawers and wireless are optional.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can Ethernet combine color Letter duplex printing, 600 included sheets and color Legal scanning from both glass and automatic duplex feeder?

Yes in the configured network arrangement, with ordinary compatible media and scan services enabled. The glass is genuinely Legal size, and the feeder scans both sides automatically. The source does not establish a single-pass mechanism. The 600-sheet count applies to ordinary Letter/A4, not Legal paper.

Can a USB-only computer connection retrieve scans from the printer?

No. Original specifications identify USB as print-only, and the guide excludes scanning over that connection. The actual scanner and local copier remain present, but network mailbox retrieval requires the documented Ethernet setup.

Does standard 6400X include 600 sheets of ordinary Legal input?

No. The 500-sheet standard main drawer accepts Letter/A4 only, so Legal uses the 100-sheet bypass. Optional extra drawers can accept Legal but are not part of the standard X capacity.

A color MFP with a genuinely Legal-size scanner

The Xerox WorkCentre 6400X is an earlier color laser multifunction printer with an unusually useful combination for document work: a Legal-size glass, automatic two-sided feeder scanning, confidential print release and included analog fax. Ethernet is the appropriate computer arrangement when scan retrieval matters. USB is explicitly print-only.

X adds fax capability to the S configuration. It does not include the XF model's two extra paper drawers, finisher or stand. That distinction affects both capacity and the space needed for the machine.

Count ordinary Letter and Legal paper separately

The standard X package has a 100-sheet multipurpose Tray 1 and a 500-sheet Tray 2, with capacities based on 20 lb, 75 gsm stock. Both accept ordinary Letter and A4, producing the familiar 600-sheet total.

Legal is different: the standard main drawer accepts only Letter and A4. Legal documents therefore use the 100-sheet bypass unless suitable optional drawers have actually been installed. A requirement for 600 included Legal sheets should not be satisfied by the general capacity headline.

Automatic two-sided printing is included. The guide documents the main-drawer duplex orientation for its Letter/A4 routine, with a general duplex weight range of 60–150 gsm. Match the paper type, source and binding direction in a compatible driver. The bypass's broader specialty-media range does not make every stock suitable for duplex.

Retrieve scans through the network mailbox

The 50-sheet feeder accepts originals from 148 by 210 to 216 by 356 mm at 50–105 gsm. Both the feeder and actual glass support Legal documents; this is more useful than a specification that offers Legal only through the feeder. Color scanning is also established.

The source confirms automatic two-sided feeder scanning, while its physical reversing or single-pass method remains unestablished. Select the appropriate sidedness and color settings for the originals. Glass scanning of a two-sided original remains a manual turn-and-rescan task.

A practical Ethernet routine stores a scan in the printer's public or configured private mailbox, then downloads it through CentreWare Internet Services. Enable the service and establish access permissions first. The default public scan is a one-sided color PDF; choose different settings before starting when required. A private folder provides the configured password policy, while desktop scan utilities additionally need their drivers.

Keep fax and confidential printing conditions clear

The X hardware includes embedded fax, which needs an appropriate analog telephone line and configured fax settings. At the panel, choose the fax service, enter the destination, set the document options and start the job. Ethernet is not a substitute for that telephone connection.

Server Fax and Internet Fax are separate arrangements requiring their server, repository or email configuration. They should not be treated as automatically active just because the model lists them.

For confidential computer output, choose Secure Print in a compatible driver and supply a 4–10 digit passcode. Use Job Status at the panel to select and release the job with the matching code. The machine includes its 80 GB hard drive; saved jobs and sample sets are distinct features from the secure-release routine.

Envelopes require a deliberate changeover

Only Tray 1 supports the documented envelope routine, with at most ten suitable envelopes. The guide calls for changing both grey fuser dials from Plain Paper to Envelope before loading, with care around the potentially hot fuser area.

Load envelopes short edge first with flaps up, placing a long-edge flap toward the right, then select the actual envelope format and type. Restore both dials to Plain Paper afterwards. Envelopes do not use automatic duplex, and their small allowance does not inherit the ordinary-sheet capacity.

Judge speed, supplies and space on their proper bases

The US specification declares up to 37 monochrome or 32 color pages per minute on Letter. A4 and Legal have separate lower figures, and scanner images per minute are different again. Recommended ordinary volume is up to 15,000 pages monthly; the 120,000 duty figure is expressly a nonsustained one-month maximum.

The original package includes declared 8,000-capacity CMY toner and 12,000-capacity black. Toner ISO yields, approximate imaging-unit life and fuser life use different measurement conditions. Match the exact supply and electrical part, particularly the US 110 V fuser.

The X body is declared at 20.8 by 23.1 by 24.7 inches and 130 pounds. Service space is substantially larger, including 10.5 inches behind the machine. Check both support strength and access. S is the related choice when fax is unnecessary; XF supplies more drawers and finishing in a much larger package.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Original US specifications declare up to 37 monochrome or 32 color pages/min on Letter, separately 35/30 on A4 and 30/26 on Legal. Scan input rates of 35/30 Letter images/min are separate. No measured performance or duplex throughput is claimed. Recommended ordinary volume is up to 15,000 pages/month; the 120,000 duty figure is expressly a one-month maximum not expected to be sustained regularly.

Paper handling

X includes a 100-sheet Tray 1 MPT and one 500-sheet Tray 2, based on 20 lb 75 gsm stock. Both support ordinary Letter/A4, totaling 600; the standard main drawer accepts only Letter/A4, so Legal uses the 100-sheet MPT. Two extra 500-sheet drawers, finisher and stand belong to the XF standard package or X options. Main drawer 60–90 gsm differs from MPT 60–210. Included automatic duplex is documented with the main drawer Letter/A4 routine and 60–150 gsm general limit; exact Legal automatic-duplex size support remains unestablished. Envelopes use only Tray 1, at most ten, short edge first with flaps up and long-edge flaps toward the right. Follow the guide to set both grey fuser dials to Envelope, then restore Plain Paper afterwards; the fuser area may be hot. Envelopes and other listed specialty media are excluded from duplex.

Scanning arrangement

Both the actual Legal-size glass and 50-sheet duplex automatic feeder support Letter, Legal and A4 originals. Feeder range is 148 x 210 to 216 x 356 mm at 50–105 gsm. Automatic two-sided feeder scanning is confirmed, but reversing versus single-pass mechanism is unestablished. Load glass originals face down at the back-left corner or feeder originals face up, top edge first. Ethernet allows scan-to-mailbox with browser download: Workflow Scanning, Local Templates, the public or configured private mailbox, settings, Start, then CentreWare IS Scan/Mailboxes and Download. Private folders require the configured password policy. Color and two-sided scan settings can be changed before scanning. USB is print-only and does not provide this computer scanning route.

Computer and mobile connections

Included USB 2.0 directly connects a compatible computer for printing; Gigabit Ethernet supports configured network printing and scan retrieval. The USB route does not inherit network scan, Internet Fax or server services. Standalone copying and X embedded analog fax can coexist with either computer print connection, using separately configured fax settings and an appropriate analog phone line; this is not fax through Ethernet/USB or a promise of VoIP compatibility. Wireless adapter is optional. Native AirPrint, Mopria and Wi-Fi Direct remain unestablished; Mobile Express Driver and Bonjour do not prove a phone protocol.

Supplies and declared yields

Original US box contents specify installed CMY toner at 8,000-page declared capacity each and black at 12,000 under ISO/IEC 19798. Replacement standard CMY parts are 106R01320/321/322; black 106R01316 is 12,000, and high CMY 106R01317/318/319 are 16,500 each. Yields vary with image, coverage and mode. Separate 108R00774/775/776/777 imaging units are approximately 30,000 pages based on average five-page Letter/A4 jobs. Waste cartridge 106R01368 is 22,000 each, sold as two; current two-pack headline 44,000 is not each. The brochure prints a conflicting 108R prefix; detailed and current sources agree on 106R. US 110 V fuser 115R00059 is approximately 150,000 pages; 220 V 115R00060 is a different part. Fuser life uses Letter/A4 20 lb 75 gsm, separately from toner ISO and drum job-length basis.

Software and support

X includes an 80 GB internal hard drive and Secure Print. In a compatible computer driver choose Secure job type and a 4–10 digit passcode; release the selected job at the panel using Job Status and the matching code. Saved jobs and sample sets are separately documented. Network scan services and any accounts/templates need administrator setup. Server Fax additionally needs a configured fax server/repository; Internet Fax needs its email arrangement. They are not automatically active base analog services. Actual current OS/driver and security policy require checking; old driver listings are not current compatibility promises.

Electrical edition and setup

Original exact US list identifies 6400/X as 110 V. Brochure electrical table covers both 110–127 and 220–240 V editions; inspect the actual label. Exact S/X unit body is 20.8 x 23.1 x 24.7 inches and 130 lb, excluding packaging. Precise consumable basis is unestablished. The 2014 specification separately requires at least 10.5 inches behind, and service/installation space at least 51 inches wide and 31 inches deep for a unit without the optional finisher. Allow loading, scanner-cover and operating access. Current maker page explicitly says no longer sold as new.
