Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can USB support two-sided Legal color capture, fax and PIN release with a 500-sheet ordinary main-tray load?
Yes, with compatible drivers, a configured USB capture destination and the separate operating analog fax line. The 50-sheet DADF supports both original faces, and a 500-sheet main-tray load fits both published tray declarations. Automatic print duplex is not included on N.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the duplex scanner mean Ethernet printing turns Letter output over automatically?
No. The exact N configuration marks automatic two-sided printed output N/A. The DADF handles incoming originals; DN is the independently documented configuration with included print duplex.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I require single-pass two-sided Legal scanning through Ethernet?
This reference does not qualify. Automatic two-sided feeder capture is positively documented, but the read original material does not establish a single-pass mechanism. Choose a model whose physical method is explicitly documented.
Explore this need in the finder →A duplex scanner does not make the N printer duplex
The Xerox WorkCentre 6605N is an earlier color laser multifunction printer with a 50-sheet duplex automatic document feeder, standard Secure Print and native analog fax. It can suit a compatible wired office that captures both faces of loose originals while printing ordinary documents one-sided.
The distinction is unusually important here: N automatic print duplex is marked unavailable in the exact configuration table, while the duplex feeder is documented for WorkCentre 6605. DN is the version with included two-sided printed output. Xerox identifies the family as no longer sold as new, so confirm the actual machine and available software before reuse.
Choose a capture route by the original
The DADF accepts suitable Letter, A4 and Legal originals. Its 50-sheet capacity is based on 75 gsm stock; simplex originals have a 50–125 gsm range, while automatic duplex originals use 60–125 gsm. Adjust the guides and check the fill line when thickness changes.
Automatic capture of both faces is positively documented, but the read sources do not establish whether this feeder reverses originals or reads both faces in one pass. Keep that distinction open when capture speed or delicate original handling decides the job. The slower declared duplex image rates are not print rates.
The glass is explicitly listed for Letter/A4. Legal belongs in the feeder, so a bound or fragile Legal original needs a documented larger glass elsewhere. Color capture is a separate supported function from color printing; select the required output format and check the completed image.
Set up the actual computer destination
USB 2.0 and gigabit Ethernet are standard. The original manual separates compatible USB computer capture from configured network shared-folder delivery. Check the necessary drivers and destination setup for the chosen connection; the print queue alone does not finish scanning installation.
USB-only scanning does not send to email or a network folder. A front USB memory destination is also a separate routine. For Ethernet delivery, confirm destination permissions and the appropriate address-book entry, then check compatibility with the computer and network actually in use.
Native AirPrint is documented on a suitable shared network with IPP, Bonjour/mDNS and appropriate discovery. The printer can use Ethernet while a compatible mobile device joins the shared network. The Wi-Fi radio is optional, and Mopria or Wi-Fi Direct adapter workflows have separate accessory conditions.
Check which paper-capacity declaration matches the unit
The October 2012 US catalog lists a 500-sheet main tray for 6605/N. The June 2017 detailed specification lists 550 sheets in the main tray plus 150 in the bypass source, totaling 700 at 75 gsm/20 lb. Those manufacturer editions disagree, so confirm the actual unit before relying on an exact total.
A 500-sheet ordinary main-tray load fits both declarations. Letter, A4 and Legal are supported, with plain stock listed at 75–105 gsm in the guide. Heavier media have separate restrictions. The bypass source has its own documented 150-sheet routine, including supported envelopes one-sided; it is not evidence for automatic envelope duplex.
The additional 550-sheet drawer is optional. A photograph showing it does not establish an included accessory, and the expanded maximum should not replace the capacity of the actual package.
Use protected jobs and fax for their intended purposes
Secure Print is standard on WorkCentre 6605. The official original section describes a compatible driver job with a passcode and release through Job Status, Secure Jobs, the user or folder and the entered code. This is separate from a panel administrator password or protected fax reception.
Ordinary stored jobs are lost when power is removed. Persistent storage needs the appropriate optional kit. Native fax separately requires an operating analog telephone line at LINE and configured fax settings; Ethernet does not provide that telephone service.
Plan workload, service parts and space
Xerox declares up to 36 one-sided Letter or 35 A4 pages per minute in color or monochrome. The current historical US page recommends up to 4,000 monthly print pages, while the 2017 detailed sheet states 5,000. Use the lower figure conservatively; the 80,000-page duty ceiling is different.
Starter yields under ISO/IEC 19798 are 3,000 black pages and 2,000 per color. Regional replacement identities and separate imaging, waste, fuser and transfer items need checking. The unpackaged body is about 16.9 inches wide, 20.8 deep and 22 high at 71.7 pounds, before optional furniture. Allow operating access and verify the actual electrical label against the documented US 110V configuration.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Declared one-sided printing is up to 36 Letter or 35 A4 pages/min in color or monochrome, without an ISO/IEC 24734 print basis asserted. Scanner rates are separate: up to 22 mono simplex / 7 mono duplex and 13 color simplex / 4 color duplex images/min for Letter/A4. The US historical page recommends up to 4,000 monthly print pages versus 5,000 in June 2017 detailed specifications; the lower 4,000 is used conservatively, with no minimum. Maximum duty is 80,000 pages, not a sustained target.
Paper handling
The exact October 2012 US 6605/N catalog says a 500-sheet main tray, while June 2017 detailed specifications give all four variants a 550-sheet main plus 150-sheet bypass and 700 total at 75 gsm / 20 lb. Exact total included capacity is left unresolved for an unspecified actual N unit. A 500-sheet ordinary main-tray load fits both declarations; the separately documented bypass routine supports 150 at 75 gsm. Letter, Legal and A4 fit both sources. Ordinary plain stock is 75–105 gsm, with distinct heavier-media limits. N automatic print duplex is N/A. Envelopes use the bypass one-sided. The second 550-sheet drawer is optional, not included.
Scanning arrangement
A 50-sheet DADF at 75 gsm supports automatic capture of both sides of suitable Letter, Legal and A4 originals. Simplex original weight is 50–125 gsm; duplex is 60–125 gsm. The read sources establish automatic duplex, but not whether the mechanism reverses or reads both faces in one pass. It does not qualify a single-pass requirement. The glass is explicitly listed for Letter/A4; Legal belongs in the feeder. Color capture is supported. Do not confuse N print-duplex absence with the independently documented duplex scanner.
Computer and mobile connections
Standard USB 2.0 Type B and gigabit Ethernet support compatible computer printing and capture. USB capture needs installed scan drivers and Express Scan Manager with an output destination, or the supported application routine. Ethernet shared-folder capture needs correct permissions and a configured address-book destination. USB-only scanning does not send to network folders or email. Front USB memory capture is distinct. Native AirPrint uses a suitable shared Ethernet network with IPP, Bonjour/mDNS and subnet discovery. Wi-Fi hardware and Mopria/Wi-Fi Direct adapter workflows are optional.
Supplies and declared yields
US starter declarations are black 3,000 and each CMY 2,000 average standard pages under ISO/IEC 19798. US standard replacements are black 106R02244 at 3,000 and CMY 106R02241/242/243 at 2,000 each; high black 106R02228 is 8,000 and high CMY 106R02225/226/227 are 6,000 each. Other regional codes differ. Imaging, waste, fuser and transfer service items are separate; maintenance declarations depend on job length, media size and orientation. Actual coverage changes toner yield. No current cost, stock or historical service promotion is promised.
Software and support
WorkCentre 6605 standard memory is 512 MB, and Secure Print is explicitly standard. A compatible driver selects Job Type and associates a 1–12 digit passcode. The complete official indexed routine releases through Job Status > Secure Jobs > user/folder > passcode > OK > quantity > Print, with optional delete-after-print confirmation. Ordinary stored jobs are volatile; a hard-drive Productivity Kit is needed for persistence, not assumed included. Native analog fax separately requires an operating line at LINE and configured fax settings. Check actual current software and telephone compatibility.
Electrical edition and setup
Earlier exact US 6605/N 110V color laser configuration is positive in the historical maker catalog; verify the actual unit label. The unpackaged WorkCentre body with replaceable units is about 16.9 x 20.8 x 22 in. at 71.7 lb, without optional drawer or stand. Allow extra feeder, glass, cover, tray and ventilation access. Confirm the actual main-tray capacity and installed options before installation; the 82.7 lb carton weight is different.
