Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can it combine single-pass Letter scanning, fax and a 3,500-page recommended monthly workload?
Yes, with a compatible setup, the documented telephone service and suitable originals. The workload uses the recommended maximum rather than maximum duty.
Explore this need in the finder →Does its 50,000-page duty figure support a recurring 10,000-page monthly requirement?
That recurring workload is not established. The recommended monthly maximum is 3,500 pages.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I require a full-size Legal scan from the flatbed?
No. The documented glass is shorter than Legal; choose a supported feeder route for suitable Legal originals.
Explore this need in the finder →The Brother Workhorse MFC-L2980DW suits a small office that needs monochrome duplex output, single-pass two-sided scanning, fax and a more managed document setup. Compared with the MFC-L2900DW, its important differences include a higher recommended monthly volume, different supplied toner and additional management-related features. It is still a compact 250-sheet office printer, not a large multi-tray configuration simply because the Workhorse name appears.
Two-sided originals have a supported automatic route
The exact US brochure describes single-pass copy, scan and fax through the automatic document feeder. That is useful when repeated incoming paperwork has content on both faces. The 50-page feeder's capacity still uses the stated paper basis; original size, condition and preparation remain part of the operating routine.
The US online guide gives the separate flatbed a maximum original area of 8.5 by 11.8 inches, covering Letter or A4. It does not become a Legal glass because the printer accepts Legal paper for output. The scanner captures color even though printed pages and physical copies remain monochrome. That combination can suit an office that archives color documents electronically but mainly needs text on paper.
Workload and supplied toner distinguish the package
Brother recommends up to 3,500 printed pages per month for this exact reference. Its 50,000-page maximum duty is a separate comparison figure, not the recurring workload to plan around. The recommended ceiling is higher than the 2,500-page reference on several nearby compact models, but the document and connection routine should still be considered alongside volume.
The standard MFC-L2980DW carton lists a TN830 cartridge rated at approximately 1,200 pages, instead of the approximately 700-page starter used by several neighboring models. The replacement list also names a TN835 super-high-yield cartridge with its own declared 5,000-page reference. Those are conditional manufacturer yields, not guaranteed counts for your documents. A current cost-per-page comparison would also need actual supply prices and usage, so no running-cost winner is invented here.
The DR830 drum remains separate from the toner cartridge and has its own stated life conditions. Treat a toner refill or cartridge replacement and drum maintenance as different events. If buying a seller's bundle, identify the exact included supplies rather than assuming that every offer carries the standard carton quantity.
Management features need their intended environment
The brochure names an integrated NFC card reader, Active Directory, LDAP, Secure Function Lock, Secure Print and other administration-related capabilities. Those can matter in a managed office, but a feature name does not mean every access-control workflow is already configured. Check the exact authentication method, software and network requirements for the process you intend to deploy.
It also lists optional services and solutions separately. Do not treat paid or separately enabled Secure Print+, third-party management tools or other optional software as part of an automatically complete base installation. A four-digit PIN-release essential deserves confirmation of the actual included job-release route rather than an inference from the presence of an NFC reader.
Connectivity and paper handling still set ordinary limits
Ethernet, dual-band 2.4/5 GHz wireless and USB 2.0 are included. AirPrint, Mopria, Wi-Fi Direct and Brother Mobile Connect are documented mobile routes. Brother states that Mac printing and scanning use AirPrint rather than a supplied native Mac printer driver. Windows Server print and scan support also varies by interface in the exact brochure, so verify the intended installation rather than applying one general software badge to every route.
The standard tray holds up to 250 sheets, alongside a separate single-sheet manual slot. Its 100-sheet output capacity and the stated media conditions still matter for a longer job. The US automatic duplex list is Letter, Legal and Folio, while A4 appears in the ordinary printing list. A4 simplex support alone should not pass an A4 automatic-duplex requirement.
A compact alternative to a larger office machine
Brother declares up to 36 single-sided pages per minute; that is not a measured duplex rate. The body measures 16.1 by 16.6 by 12.5 inches and weighs 27.5 lb. Allow working clearance for the scanner lid, feeder, paper and service access, plus the required cables and ventilation. The US product record specifies 110–120 V AC, 50/60 Hz.
Choose this configuration when its documented workload, supplied toner and managed-office features earn their place in your setup. Compare the MFC-L2900DW if ordinary single-pass scanning and fax are sufficient without those particular package and management differences. If scanning is unnecessary, begin with a print-only model instead of buying document features you will not use.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Manufacturer-declared up to 36 one-sided Letter pages per minute, not a measured or duplex rate.
Paper handling
Up to 250 sheets in the ordinary tray on the stated 20 lb basis; separate single-sheet manual media path. Letter, Legal and A4 ordinary printing. US automatic duplex covers Letter and Legal; A4 duplex is not assigned from a generic speed-table mention.
Computer and mobile connections
Ethernet, dual-band 2.4/5 GHz wireless and USB 2.0. Network AirPrint/Mopria have their stated conditions. Mac uses AirPrint rather than a supplied native Mac printer driver.
Supplies and declared yields
Ordinary US package lists approximately 1,200 pages of supplied black toner under ISO/IEC 19752; separate DR830 drum has a conditional approximately 15,000-page reference. Additional-supply bundles are different offers.
Electrical edition and setup
US 110–120 V AC, 50/60 Hz; body dimensions exclude operating and ventilation clearance. Check the exact US rating and supplied configuration.
