ECOSYS M5521cdwIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

An office needing color pages, copying and mainly single-sided loose-original scanning over a supported USB or network setup.

The main tradeoff

The feeder does not scan both sides automatically, and Private Print needs optional memory or a card. Legal feeder support does not establish Legal glass.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a USB office routine combine color duplex printing, copying and single-sided Legal color scans?

Yes, with compatible software and the documented simplex feeder. Automatic two-sided output is separate from how original pages are scanned.

Does automatic print duplex also qualify it for automatic two-sided original scanning?

No. The exact model has the simplex ADF; its guide describes two-sided output from single-sided originals.

Does the standard package meet a PIN-release requirement?

No. Exact guide requires expansion memory or an SD/SDHC card for Private Print/ProofHold.

The color MFP for mainly single-sided originals

The Kyocera ECOSYS M5521cdw provides color printing, scanning, copying and fax hardware with included wireless networking. Its five-line display and physical keys differ from the touchscreen on the related M5526cdw. More significantly, its 50-sheet document feeder scans one side of an original automatically rather than providing automatic two-sided capture.

That makes the original-document routine the useful first decision. Someone working mainly with single-sided forms can consider the feeder on its own merits. Someone regularly digitizing two-sided stacks should compare the separate duplex-scanner model instead of assuming both family members share that hardware.

Print duplex does not give the feeder two-sided scanning

The exact operation guide describes making two-sided copies from single-sided originals. That is an output arrangement, not evidence that the feeder automatically scans both document sides. Its scanner table gives the one-sided feeder conditions separately from the printer's automatic duplex function.

Legal originals are positively supported through the feeder. The American sheet separately lists the glass at up to 8.5×11 inches, while the guide has a broader generic copy/original maximum. For Legal scanning, plan around the independently supported feeder rather than assign that general maximum to every physical input. Respect the feeder's permitted stock and stack-loading limits.

Included Wi-Fi is useful when the software matches

The exact cdw configuration includes Wi-Fi, Ethernet and a USB computer interface. The operation guide also documents those computer-scanning interfaces with compatible drivers or configured destinations. A USB desktop arrangement and a shared network can therefore be considered as distinct real workflows.

On the network, an SMB folder or email destination still needs the correct access and settings. AirPrint and Mopria belong to their compatible network-print arrangements. Wi-Fi Direct is a separate peer route; every scanning method or protocol should not simply be copied into it from an infrastructure-network setup. Fax hardware also needs its own suitable telephone arrangement.

Use the supplied paper configuration and exact size

The base input supply totals 300 sheets from a 250-sheet cassette and 50-sheet multipurpose tray. The guide limits the full multipurpose load to A4/Letter or smaller at the stated stock weight. For Legal minimum-capacity checking, the positively documented cassette provides a 250-sheet basis.

The 550-sheet maximum needs an optional feeder. Automatic ordinary-paper duplex and envelope handling are separate instructed media routines, with their own allowed stock and feed settings. An expanded machine in a photograph does not establish which paper hardware comes with the offered package.

Private Print requires an upgrade in this model

The original operation guide says Private Print and Proof-and-Hold require expansion memory or an SD/SDHC card. Standard-package PIN release is therefore not assigned merely because the feature is mentioned in a marketing list. Check the actual installed hardware if held jobs are a deciding requirement.

Other Job Box modes have separate card conditions, and compatible driver or application setup still matters. This avoids treating a family-wide list of possible functions as a guarantee that a basic unit can immediately perform every one of them.

Compare the real speed, body and alternative

The manufacturer declares one-sided black and color rates of 22 pages per minute on Letter, 18 on Legal and 21 on A4. The higher 1200×1200 setting carries a reduced-speed condition. Scanner images per minute are different measurements, and we have not measured finished print quality or complete-job throughput.

The body is approximately 16.42×16.89×19.49 inches including the feeder, with a listed 57.33lb weight excluding toner. Leave working clearance and verify the actual 120V/60Hz electrical edition. The 65,000-page duty is a maximum, not a recommended monthly workload or remaining-life estimate. If automatic two-sided original scanning changes the decision, compare the M5526cdw assessment for its different feeder and touchscreen rather than selecting from a shared appearance.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Declared black/color one-sided Letter 22 ppm, Legal 18 ppm, A4 21 ppm. Higher 1200 × 1200 setting is at reduced processing speed. Scanner ipm and automatic print duplex are different conditions.

Paper handling

Standard 250-sheet cassette plus 50-sheet MP tray. Full MP load is A4/Letter or smaller at 80 gsm; Legal minimum check uses the positively documented 250-sheet cassette. 550 maximum needs an optional feeder.

Scanning arrangement

50-sheet simplex ADF and color scanning. Exact American sheet supports Legal through feeder but separately limits glass to 8.5 × 11. Broader generic copy/original maximum does not establish Legal glass. Exact USB/Ethernet/WLAN computer scanning documented.

Computer and mobile connections

USB computer, Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct standard on exact cdw. AirPrint/Mopria use compatible infrastructure network; peer-only computer-scanning and mobile-protocol combinations not established. Fax hardware needs its separate telephone setup.

Supplies and declared yields

Separate toner and imaging components. Exact region, supply identity, starter/replacement assumptions and present price need their own checks; no copied maintenance-life number is used as remaining life.

Software and support

Private Print/ProofHold require expansion memory or SD/SDHC card in the exact guide. Standard-package PIN release does not qualify. Other stored jobs have separate card conditions; confirm current driver/app support.

Electrical edition and setup

Reviewed 120 V/60 Hz/8.6 A edition; other voltages separate. Body 16.42 × 16.89 × 19.49 in including feeder; 57.33 lb without toner. Five-line display with hard keys, not M5526 touchscreen. 65,000 maximum duty is not a recommended monthly ceiling.
