Which compact Brother monochrome printer fits your paperwork?

Start with the originals you handle. A compact monochrome Brother printer can be a print-only device, a flatbed copier, a feeder-equipped multifunction machine or a single-pass document station. The model number alone does not tell you which one you are buying.

For printed reports without a scanner

The HL-L2405W is a straightforward wireless print-only reference. Its declared rate is up to 30 single-sided Letter pages per minute. It has USB and Wi-Fi, but neither an Ethernet socket nor automatic two-sided printing. That can suit a desk producing occasional one-sided documents; it leaves more manual work when reports routinely need both sides.

The HL-L2460DW adds automatic duplex output and Ethernet, with a declared rate of up to 36 single-sided Letter pages per minute. It remains print-only. Choose between these around the connection and the finished page, rather than expecting the faster machine to scan because another nearby Brother number does.

For individual originals on glass

The HL-L2465DW and HL-L2480DW include flatbed scanning and copying despite their HL names. Neither has an automatic document feeder or fax. A single receipt, book page or loose original goes on the glass; a stack means repeating the placement yourself.

The HL-L2465DW has a two-line LCD, Wi-Fi and USB, without Ethernet, and a declared 30-page-per-minute Letter print rate. The HL-L2480DW provides a 2.7-inch touchscreen, Ethernet alongside wireless and USB, and a declared 36-page-per-minute rate. If a wired office connection or a touch interface matters, that is a more useful distinction than the small difference in the number printed on the case.

For stacks of single-sided paperwork

The DCP-L2640DW adds a 50-sheet document feeder to its flatbed, with printing, scanning and copying but no fax. The MFC-L2820DW adds telephone fax and a 2.7-inch touchscreen. Both have Ethernet, Wi-Fi and USB. Their declared single-sided Letter print rates are 36 and 34 pages per minute respectively.

Both feeders scan one face of an original automatically. Their automatic duplex printing handles the output sheet, not the back of the original in the feeder. For a weekly stack of two-sided signed forms, select automatic two-sided scanning separately in the finder. Otherwise the printer can look suitable on a feature list while leaving the manual step you most wanted to remove.

For repeated two-sided originals

The MFC-L2900DW and MFC-L2980DW have 50-sheet single-pass two-sided document feeders, fax and 3.5-inch touchscreens. Their documented Letter scanning route handles both faces in one pass. Both declare up to 36 single-sided Letter printed pages per minute. That print figure is separate from scan throughput or two-sided printing speed.

The Workhorse MFC-L2980DW is distinguished by a recommended monthly volume up to 3,500 pages, approximately 1,200 pages of standard supplied toner, and additional management features. The MFC-L2900DW has a recommended maximum of 2,500 pages and approximately 700 pages of supplied starter toner. Both retain a 250-sheet ordinary tray. Optional replacement toner capacity does not enlarge the tray or establish a current cost-per-page winner.

Keep the paper and connection conditions together

For the US configurations discussed here, Letter and Legal are documented automatic print-duplex sizes on models that include that function. A4 ordinary printing is listed separately. Their flatbed area is up to 8.5 by 11.8 inches, so a Legal original does not fit full-size on the glass. The feeder is a separate route with its own size and media conditions; use the exact model's review when combining a size with a feeder method.

Mac printing and scanning use the supported AirPrint arrangement rather than a supplied native Mac printer driver. Ethernet or ordinary Wi-Fi can place the appropriate models on a compatible network. Wi-Fi Direct is a separate setup; do not assume a successful direct phone print establishes a computer scanning route. For fax-equipped models, follow the telephone connection instructions as well.

Start with the job you want to simplify

For occasional printed letters, begin with monochrome wireless printing. For signed originals with content on both sides, begin with single-pass Letter scanning, then add your actual connection. If fax is essential, choose all four document functions. Read the resulting model review for the specific supplies, paper paths and setup that remain relevant.

Specifications and package details are drawn from the exact US model records and original Brother brochures linked in each assessment, plus Brother's model-specific US specification guide. Toner figures use the manufacturer's stated yield conditions; this comparison does not substitute them for measured running costs.
